In the Order of Melchizedek: Do I have to Tithe?

One Sunday morning, a husband and wife decided to sleep in. It had been a busy and tiring weekend. They got to bed just before midnight and could barely open their eyes the next morning. His wife opened her eyes first, gently putting her hand on his shoulder and whispered, “Honey, it’s time to wake up.”  Her husband rolled over on his side, opposite to her touching hand and mumbled, “I am sleeping-in, leave me be.”  But his wife was persistent and with a firm push to his back, said “please wake up, it’s late!”  With his wife’s prodding him, he sat up in bed and exclaimed, “Do I have to?”  Her answer, “Honey you have to get up. You’re the Pastor”. Have you ever had this conversation with yourself or with others before? “Do I have to go to work today?” or “Do I have to mow the lawn today?” or “Do we have to go shopping today?” That last question would come from MY lips; NOT Diannes’. My detective work is into the question of today’s heading, “Do I have to Tithe?”

The last time we met, I had uncovered some truths in regard to tithing. The differences of the Tithe of the Abrahamic Covenant in Genesis 14:18-24; 15:1 and  Numbers 18:21, 24, 28; Deut. 14:22-23; “The Law of Tithing”.  I sat in a Sunday School class years ago when the subject of “tithing” had come up. Since this was an adult discussion class, a question arose from the group, “Where does it say in the New Testament, we have to tithe? Isn’t the Law no longer in effect concerning the Tithe?”  Lets look at the answer to that question and turn to Hebrews 6, starting with verse 20.

…Jesus has entered in for us [in advance], a Forerunner having become a High Priest forever after the order (with the rank) of Melchizedek.”

The order of Mechizedek explained in Hebrews, tells us that we can tithe as Abram tithed. The High Priest is now Jesus.  Continuing on in Hebrews 7:1-7, the Word says no one told Abraham that he had to tithe. This was a different concept than the Levitical Law which came four-hundred years later. In verse 5 of Hebrews 7, we read that Levi’s descendants were charged in their priestly office to take the tihes of the people. That was the Law to “take the tithes from the people—which means, from their brethren—though these have descended from Abraham.”  Then in verses 6-7:

But this person who has not their Levitical ancestry received tithes from Abraham [himself] and blessed him who possessed the promise [of God].  Yet it is beyond all contradiction that it is the lesser person who is blessed by the greater one.”

What I uncovered from these verses was that anything GOOD that happens to me, comes from God.  GOOD, like ‘a new job’ or ‘a great wife’ or becoming “The Word Detective” on a blog, anything GOOD! I have the “ROOT” in “The Blessing” and now I give “The Glory” or “the FRUIT” back to God. Now to the question, “Do I have to Tithe?” Lets look at what Hebrews 7:11-16 says,

Verse 11  “Now if perfection (a perfect fellowship between God and the worshipper) had been attainable by the Levitical priesthood—for under it the people were given the Law—why was it further necessary that there should arise another and different kind of Priest, one after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one appointed after the order and rank of Aaron?”

Now since JESUS didn’t come from the priestly line of Levi.  He came from another tribe—Judah. Moses had never mentioned anything about priests in connection with that tribe [verses 12-14]. The results are then pretty obvious in verse 15-16.

And this becomes more plainly evident when another Priest arises Who bears the likeness of Melchizedek.”

“Who has been constituted a Priest, not on the basis of a bobily legal requirement [an externally imposed command concerning His physical ancestry], but on the basis of the POWER of an endless and indestructible Life.”

JESUS takes on a position; not by legality, but on the basis of power. With His power, Jesus is the greater and I am the lesser. The blessing exchange can now take place.

Verses 17 says, “For it is witnessed of Him, You are a Priest forever after the order (with the rank)nof Melchizedek.”

The previous Law had been revoked because of ” the weakness and ineffectiveness and uselessness” of any physical regulation like tithing.  2 Corinthians 3: 6 says it is not “…the letter (of a legally written code or Law) but of the Spirit; for the code [of the Law] kills, but the [Holy] Spirit makes alive.”

In Genesis 14 we began with “the Tithe Exchange”.  We learned by the investigation that it wasn’t about the money. It was the obedience exchange, hanging from the curtain rod of Love for God and His LOVE in return through Melchizedek. God showed His LOVE through “The Blessing” or the empowerment. The Exchange continues through our High Priest Jesus, in the order or rank of Melchizedek.

Now whenever there is a Law, there is also a consequence. If the speed limit posted is 55 mph and you don’t obey, you can and will suffer from the disobedience. Turn to Malachi 3:10, a familiar verse that every church preaches on; the subject of tithing. I want to try to show you how not to BLOCK your flow to The Blessing; to see results of The Glory.

Bring all the tithes (the whole tenth of your income) into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and prove Me now by it, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

The word “pour” in the Hebrew language means “empty”. It is ALL that I have; you have made a “withdrawal” from “The Blessing” with your TITHE. And you obedience hangs on the curtain rod of LOVE. Wow, that is powerful! Now back up to Malachi 3:8-9:

“Will a man rob or defraud God? Yet you rob and defraud Me, BUT you say, In what way do we rob or defraud You? [You have withheld your] tithes and offerings.”

The sign along the life-road you travel says, “Tithe Exchange” ahead. Obey what is in front of you or not. “Do I have to Tithe?” Look at verse 9 for the disobedience in what you already know to do.

You are cursed with the curse, for you are robbing Me…”  I am not telling you that if you do not tithe you have a “curse”. God’s Word says so!

You have chosen a “sin- blocker” penalty. You have been living in disobedience, unfaithfulness, an un-pure heart and no tithe exchange. Four opposing ways to receiving the blessing flow. You are not seeing any results or “fruit” from what has been deposited in The Blessing.

God has set before you two choices in life in Deuteronomy 30:19, “I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your decendants may live.” Verse 20 then says, “And may LOVE the Lord your God, obey His voice, and cling to Him…”

“Do I have to Tithe?” ‘It is not the letter of the Law but by His Spirit’ that you must choose. The Blessing or The Curse” Life or Death? To Tithe or Not to Tithe?

The 4th Key to the Withdrawal of The Blessing: the Tithe Exchange

I think it was in 1973, about a year had passed since both Dianne and I had been saved. We both accepted Jesus as our Saviour on the same night in August of 1972. That is a whole another story. Where was I, oh yes; it was sometime in 1973.  Our pastor had just given a message on the importance of tithing to God. We had been giving money; what we thought was tithing, for almost two years.  Five dollars here, ten dollars there; when ever we had loose change.  Pastor’s message on ‘to tithe or not to tithe’ wasn’t his first sermon on the subject. And as we found out over the years, it wouldn’t be his last. We had three small children who were at the ages of 3, 5 and 7.  And like most everyone else, we had a mortgage and a car payment with one small paycheck,  covering everything else that had to be paid. Tithing at the time, just wasn’t in our budget. And, we didn’t think it should be. We gave what we thought we had to give. Then after the pastor’s message on tithing, the Holy Spirit turned on the light bulb for the both of us. Being both young in the Lord, we had little knowledge of the workings of Holy Spirit but we started tithing from then on with His prompting. Circumstances came into our lives making me think,  “perhaps we will postpone the tithe this week” but we were both faithful to the Word. Not because a pastor prompted us but from God’s encouragement. What does The Tithe mean and what is the importance of The Tithe Exchange  in The Withdrawal of The Blessing?

Matthew 3:2 says,  “And saying, Repent (think differently; change your mind, regretting your sins and changing your conduct), for the kingdom of God is at hand.”

Romans 15:4  “For whatever was thus written in former days was written for our instruction, that by [our steadfast and patient] endurance and the encouragement [drawn] from the Scriptures we might hold fast to and cherish hope.”

To really get a grasp on The Tithe Exchange as the 4th key to making a withdrawal from The Blessing, we are going to have to start thinking differently and change our minds about and attitudes about tithing. Through that change in thinking, we  have to be steadfast and patient and get encouragement from the Word of God. The “light bulb” has to come on by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is like someone telling you that you have a bad habit. Until the “light bulb” is turned on and you decide, not them will you change your mind. Tithing works the same way.

Picture in your minds, the curtains hanging in your home. They are generally held in place over the window by a curtain rod. If the curtain rod comes down from where it is placed, the curtains will slip off the rod. on to the floor. Turn to Matthew 22:37-40 to further illustrate my point; ‘to tithe or not to tithe, that is the question’. In verse 36, Jesus is asked by an expert in the Law, “which kind of commandment is more important in the Law? [Some commandments are light–which are heavy?]”

Verses 37-40,  “And He (Jesus) replied to him, You shall LOVE the Lord your God with ALL your heart and with ALL your soul and with ALL your mind (intellect),  This is the great (most important, principle) and first commandment.  And a second is like it; You shall LOVE  your neighbor as [you do] your self.  These two commandments sum up and upon them depend the Law and the Prophets.”

LOVE is the curtain rod. Everything hangs on LOVE; tithes, fasting, giving to the poor, everything that you do!  If LOVE falls, then everything else falls on your floor.  In Genesis 2:16-17 we will see how the issue of LOVE is the issue in our tithing.

Verse 16,  “And the Lord god commanded man, saying, You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; BUT of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and blessing and calamity you shall NOT eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

God spoke to man telling him you can have the 90% of the fruit in the garden–NOT the 10%. The issue in God’s Word was about His LOVE for mankind.  What is a TITHE then? A tithe is “the 10% of the increase”. The ALL came from God; He says you can keep it ALL except for a tenth. First the TITHE and then the blessing.  And ” The Blessing” is an anointing or empowerment; for you, on you and around you.  All for you to be succesful through out your life.” And a “ANOINTING is, “a covering, an indwelling, a heaviness placed upon you.”   Turn back again, to Genesis 14:18-23 and we will see “The Blessing Exchange” once more. We can even call the phrase, “The Love Exchange”.

Verse 18 starts out in saying,  “Melchizedek king of Salem [later called Jerusalem] brought out bread and wine [for their nourishment]; he was the priest of God Most High,”   Verse 19,  “And he blessed him and said, BLESSED be Abram by God Most High, Possessor and Maker of heaven and earth.”  Verse 20 continues in saying,  “And blessed, praised, and glorified be God Most High, Who has given your foes into your hand! And [Abram] gave him a tenth of ALL [he had taken].

First The Tithe… then the blessing. Abram gave God his tithe not because he had to BUT because he LOVED God. The Law on tithing was not in play until almost four hundred years later. What was Abram’s WITHDRAWAL from the Abrahamic Covenant? Look at Genesis 15:1:  “After these things, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not Abram, I AM your Shield, your abundant compensation and your reward shall be exceedingly great.”  Not only was this the first  introduction to the word “tithe” in the Bible, it is the first time in the Bible for “the word”; “vision”; “I AM”; and “reward” . Its fun to be a Word Detective. I wasn’t looking for it but it was there all the time.

In Genesis 17:7 we look at The Abrahamic Covenant once again.  “And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting, solemn pledge, to be a God to you and to your posterity after you.” Then in Genesis 28:22 there is an exchange again, “And this stone which I have set up as a pillar (monument) shall be God’s house [a sacred place to me], and of ALL [the increase of possessions] that You give me I will give the tenth to you.” So the TITHE is Not the Law, it is the “Abrahamic Covenant”.

So where do we get the idea that tithing is a Law? Go to Deuteronomy 14:22 to look at the “you shall’s” of God.

Verse 22,  “You shall surely tithe ALL the yield of your seed produced by your field each year.” That is the “gross amount”.

“Yeah BUT this is the 21st Century. I don’t have a field of seed. What is my seed? How am I to tithe, when I don’t even have a good source?” Go to verse 25 and see God’s anticipation to your good question.

Verse 25 says,  “Then you shall turn it (Whatever you have produced) into money, and bind up the seed money in your hand, and shall go to the place [of worship] which the Lord your God has chosen.”

“Okay, I get it. So, amI to tithe on my gross salary or my net?” I have heard that question more than once. The correct answer to your question is, “how is your LOVE CONNECTION? ” There isn’t any selfishness in love. You have to choose between tithing in LOVE or tithing out of SELFISHNESS; then the Tithe Exchange works.

Tomorrow I will conclude my detective work concerning, “The 4th Key to the Withdrawal of The Blessing: The Tithe Exchange”.  We will investigate the truth in Hebrew 7 and see how we can tithe like Abram tithed. We will also look at God’s Word to see if NOT TITHING is really a BLESSING BLOCKER or did some church make it up.

Getting Results in Prayer-“A Foggy Day”; Part IV (via The WORD Detective)

This personal story brought back visions of the miracles of God. Did I see angels there that morning? No, but they were there whether I could see them or not!

It was early one morning, on a fall day when I began my commute to work. When I say commute, I meant it was a commute! From my garage in Poway, California to my parking space in San Bernardino, California it was exactly 95 miles, one way. It was freeway mileage most of the way in 1978, but in most places, it was two lanes north and two lanes south. There wasn't anything unusual that morning; traffic was minimal and the sun was starting to appear … Read More

The God of the Turn Around—Increasing The Blessing Flow!

My detective work in the last few BLOGS have centered around “The Blessing Flow”. We asked ourselves the question, “If I truly have received The Blessing, where are the results in my life?” Proverbs 10:22 tells us “The Blessing of the Lord–it makes [truly] rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.”  You might be looking at you circumstances right now; your debt, your physical condition, your emptiness in your savings and checking accounts, or your “LACK” in general. I want to tell all of you, IT”S TIME FOR RESULTS!  IT’S TIME FOR NEW BEGINNINGS! Remember word prosperity is not only money…it’s WHOLENESS! Financial gain is known only as ‘a slice of the pie’ to your spiritual wholeness.

I discovered through investigating God’s Word, there are ways to make withdrawals from The Blessing. To develop the flow of God’s empowerment; His super on our natural. We also uncovered clues on ways we can BLOCK THE BLESSING. Today, I want to give you assurance, through the Word of God that He is “The God of the Turn Around.”

Turn to Psalm 51. We will look at some important evidence; how God can put us on the right track to “making us [truly] rich” or whole again.

Verse  2-3 says, “Wash me thoroughly [and repeatedly] from my iniquity and guilt (from an UN-PURE HEART) and cleanse me and make me wholly PURE from my sin.  For I am conscious of my transgressions and I acknowledge them; my sin is ever before me.”

Now look at verse 5 to understand the importance of confessing that you have a “BLESSING BLOCKER”  or curse in your life.

“Behold, I was brought forth in [a state of] iniquity; my mother was sinful who conceived me [and I too am sinful].” [John 3:6; Rom. 5:12; Eph. 2:3]

Here comes the starting point, from “The God of the Turn Around“, in Psalm 51:6-10. Now this Psalm of David arose when Nathan the prophet came to him after he had sinned with Bathsheba. Adultery was written in the Law. David knew that his sin had dammed up The Blessing Flow. He knew, even though he was the “apple of his Father’s eye”, he had an un-pure heart.  He knew he was in disobedience of God’s Word. He knew that God wanted the TRUTH from him.

Verse 6,  “Behold, You desire truth in the inner being; make me therefore to know wisdom in my inmost heart.”   David’s “inmost heart” was [“his doer, his thinker, his knower”].

If there is TRUTH on the inside, then wisdom is not far behind.  Jesus said, “I AM the way and the TRUTH. No one comes to the Father except through the Son.” If you believe in Jesus, then you already have the TRUTH living inside of you. If you are not unveiling the TRUTH, there must be a “sin blocker” in the way. In David’s case, it is from an “UN-PURE HEART”. How can we remove this curse that is blocking The Blessing,  the prosperity in our lives? Might we have spiritual adultery in our life? “Stuff” in our lives that is more important than our love of God. The church is known as “the bride of Christ”. As believers, are we being unfaithful?

Verse 7 says,  “Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean [ceremonially], wash me, and I shall [in reality] be whiter than snow.” Verse 9 says,  “Hide your face from my sins and blot out ALL my guilt and iniquities.”

If we don’t have a PURE HEART; seeing the desired results of The Blessing Flow, then we need a turn around. If people who are around us; on our jobs or in our neighborhoods don’t see any results. Then we need a turn around. God has sent to us the Holy Spirit, who is our helper and comforter. God is a “God of the Turn Around“. Ask the Father, in Jesus Name, in the Power of His Spirit, what David asked God for in Psalm 51:10:

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and RENEW a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me.”

Verse 10 has revealed an important clue in overcoming the CURSE of an UN-PURE HEART. His clue is God’s answer, to the TURN AROUND. It is the missing link in receiving The Blessing Flow and the Glory in our lives. We will see it first then others will too. Turn to Romans 12 and see how we can be “well pleasing to God, which is our reasonable service and spiritual worship.” [verse 1] We have a respondsiblity to obedience to the Word. Are we going to be obedient or disobedient? Faithful or Unfaithful? Blessing flow or Blessing blocker? Our choices!

Verse 2 says,  “Do not be conformed to this world [this age], [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], BUT be transformed (changed) by the [entire] RENEWAL of your mind (your doer, thinker and knower) [a new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the things which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].”

We have learned three of the ways or keys to withdraw from what has been deposited in our behalf; The Blessing.

#1.  Obedience to His Word.

#2.  Faithfulness.

#3.  A Pure Heart.

We also learned the opposite ways in blocking The Blessing.

#1.  Disobedience to His Word.

#2.  Unfaithfulness.

#3.  An Un-pure Heart.

In the next time we meet, I will investigate and uncover the truth behind the fourth way to withdraw from the Blessing; “The Tithe Exchange”.

PURITY—The Gateway to the Flow of THE BLESSING

I love to eat and I love to look through recipes; new and old. It can even be my passion at times. I was looking at a recipe that the Food Network had sent to me via email yesterday. In the ingredients, it called for a 1/4 c  of Clarified Butter (or purified butter). Being “The Word Detective” that I am, I began searched out the terms, “CLARIFIED” and “PURIFIED”. My findings; a condensed explanation of the cooking terms.  “Melt the butter in a clean bowl, over the top of a pan with simmering water, until the butter melts. Wait until the butter solids or impurities sink to the bottom of the bowl and remove.  This is the PURE or CLARIFIED butter. Be careful that the impurities do not contaminate the results”. That is a very brief description of the meaning, “to clarify or purify” butter.

What does butter have to do with our discussion today,  “PURITYThe Gateway to the Flow of THE BLESSING”? Can a PURE HEART or not an UN-PURE HEART, affect your withdrawal from The Blessing? Lets look at some definitions, according to Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary. Then I will proceed with my detective work of God’s Word; how the Holy Spirit can be our helper in understanding in “the Flow of The Blessing”

PURITY—“hagnos” [from the Greek lexicon], “pure from defilement, not contaminated”.

HEART—  “kardia” [from the Greek lexicon], (a) “the seat of physical life, (b) “the seat of moral nature and spiritual life, the seat of grief; our desires; our affections; our perceptions; our thought life; the understanding; the reasoning powers; our imaginations; conscience; our intentions; our purposes.”

Vine’s gives scripture verses for who we are; in the inner man or the HEART. I will look at some verses more closely, in determining how a PURE HEART an UN-PURE HEART can affect the withdrawal of The Blessing.

We already have learned in my previous BLOGS that God has already given us “The Blessing”; we are blessed. (Ephesians 1:3)    We also came up with the proper definition of “The Blessing”:  “It is the empowerment or force from God that will grant you success in everything”.  We have learned and know that if we as believers, live by faith, we are [the true] sons of Abraham. (Galatians 1:7-8) We should also understand and know the promises that  come in the Galatians 3.

Verse 13  says, “Christ purchased our freedom [redeeming us] from the CURSE (doom) of the Law [and its condemnation] by [Himself] becoming a CURSE for us, for it is written [in Scriptures], CURSED is everyone who hangs on a tree (is crucified).”

Verse 14 continues, “To the end that through [their receiving] Christ Jesus, THE BLESSING [promised] to Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, so that we through faith might [all] receive [the realization of] the promise of the [Holy] Spirit.”

Christ has redeemed us from the CURSE. Nobody can reverse THE BLESSING received. The Blessing is GREATER than the CURSE.  You can only be free of the CURSE; the Law of sin and death, by receiving what has already been deposited in our names through what Jesus has done for us. (Romans 8:2-3; “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus” or “the law of sin and death”). Is there a responsibility we must take hold of after we have been redeemed? If that is your question, it is a good one. We need a foundation to start building on; so we can make a withdrawal from The Blessing. What has already been deposited in our account.

2 Timothy 2:19  “But the firm FOUNDATION of (laid by) God stands, sure and unshaken, bearing this seal (inscription): The Lord knows those who are His, and, Let everyone who names [himself by] the name of the Lord GIVE UP ALL INIQUITY and stand aloof from it.”

And in Verse 21 goes on to say, “So whoever cleanses himself [from what is ignoble and unclean, who separates himself from contact with CONTAMINATING and CORRUPTING influences] be a vessel set apart and useful for honorable and noble purposes, consecrated and profitable to the Master, fit and ready for any good work.”

If we build on this FIRM FOUNDATION, our withdrawals from The Blessing can’t be blocked. That’s not what I said but what God’s Word says. The verses say we must “purge” ourselves and “depart” before we are” fit and ready for any good work”. That’s the GLORY!

Lets look next at the “blessing flow” which comes from a PURE HEART. Turn to the Book of Psalms 24:3-5.

Verse 3,  “Who shall go up into the mountain of the Lord? Or who shall stand in His Holy Place?”

Verse 4,  “He who has clean hands and a PURE HEART, who has not lifted himself up to falsehood or to what is false, nor sworn deceitfully.”

Verse 5,  “He shall receive BLESSING from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation.”

From a PURE HEART the BLESSING FLOWS.  Free from anything that impairs, contaminates or is not genuine. A heart that becomes like “clarified or purified butter”.  Go now to Matthew 5, verse 8,

“BLESSED (happy, enviably fortunate, and spiritually prosperous–possessing the happiness produced by the experience of God’s favor and especially conditioned by the revelation of His grace, regardless of their outward condition} are the PURE IN HEART, for they shall see God.”  Amplified translation.

That is what a PURE HEART produces. In our thought life, our emotions, our will, our intentions, our understanding; the issues of life that come from our inner man.  A Heart that is sincere with the right motives; a heart that wants to please God! A PURE HEART is the third way to withdraw the BLESSING.  And if you are dealing with the condition of an UN-PURE  HEART, the condition is blocking the BLESSING FLOW.

Tomorrow we are going to continue the detective work into, “PURITY— The Gateway to the Flow of the Blessing”. I am going to call it “The God of the Turn Around”.  Start looking in The Book of Psalms 51:6-10, at the renewing of the heart. Have you ever heard the expression, “That melts my heart”? Will your heart be “clarified” and “purified” like butter?

FAITHFULNESS—An Important Key in Withdrawal

I found myself zoning out in my investigative study on “The Blessing” the other day. Dianne walked into the study and asked, “Do you know how much we have saved up towards our 50th Anniversary Trip?”  We have been putting away each month, a certain amount money for almost two years. This September will be our 47th anniversary, leaving three more years of saving faithfully! When we first started this five-year quest, we decided that if we wanted to do something extravagant and not “penny-pinch”; to be  “FAITHFUL”  in our saving; FAITHFULNESS would bring results.  We would have to be obedient to our commitment of saving. First Corinthians 4:2 says, “Moreover, it is [essentially] required of stewards that a man should be found faithful [proving himself worthy of trust].” Amplified Version.  FAITHFULNESS can be defined as, “doing the things you were told to do in obedience to the word”. A ‘few things first’; ‘many things’ next. I like Dr. Creflo Dollar’s definition of “FAITHFULNESSor “FAITH”.  “It is the practical expression of the confidence in God and in His Word”.  At first, our savings toward the 50th Wedding Anniversary didn’t look like much. But it was a practical expression!  We are going to trust God in our saving towards the trip. Our FAITH has become a discipline with a delayed reward.

Are you faithful in paying your bills?  Are you faithful in cleaning the house?  Are you faithful in taking out the trash? It takes discipline at times. Especially if our check books seem so little.  The old saying goes like this, “You can’t have a mansion unless you have a mansion mentality”. Lets go to God’s Word in our discipline. Matthew 25:14-28.

Jesus has been giving instructions by His words, concerning His returning from Heaven after His death.  He gives a command to them in verse 13, when He says they are to “Watch therefore [give strict attention and be cautious and active], for you know neither the day nor the hour when the Son of Man will come.”   Then starting in verse 14, He begins to paint a picture for them to make more sense and says, “For it is like…”  Have you ever had instructions in a matter and were totally lost? JESUS might have said, Disciples, you look lost so I am going to explain it clearly.” The man is going to take a long journey and decides to TRUST three servants with the stewardship of the property. Remember I Corinthian 4:2, the requirement of being a STEWARD?  They must prove themselves worthy of trust [Amplified Version]. Now the man gives the three servants different sums of money to start out with. One, he gave about $5000.00. The second servant, about $2000.oo and finally the third servant, about $1000.00.  Why different amounts? Verse 15 says he gave “to each in proportion to his own personal ability.” The property owner gave each servant “a few small things”.  The lesson is beginning to take shape regarding the R.O.I. [return on  investment]. Will the just “a few things” be turn into the “many things”? Look at how the servants responded to their Master’s trust, in verses 16-18.  Five talents became ten talents with the first servant. Two talents became four talents and finally…one talent became…one talent! Here is where excuses and explanations come into play. “Those other two guys had more money to deal with” or “they were more experienced” or “they had more time for increase”. Remember the money was given to them based on their “own personal ability”. Verse 19 says, “Now after a long time…” We don’t know what it means, “a long time”. We do know that each servant had the same time to do with what was given.  Verse 23 next gives us an understanding of those who were being FAITHFUL.

“…Well done, you upright (honorable, admirable) and faithful servant! You have been FAITHFUL and TRUSTWORTHY over little: I will put you in charge of much…”  and in verse 28 we see the “few things”, over “a long time” turn into “many things”. EXCEPT… for the one servant, who had put the money entrusted to him in an old coffee can. His unfaithfulness left him with NOTHING! He couldn’t make a withdrawal from the blessing given. Why did he squander an opportunity to see the glory? Look at verse 25:

“So I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground…”

If you are afraid, God can’t depend on you; FEAR is the FAITH of the devil. You or I can’t be a FAITHFUL STEWARD if we walk in FEAR. What the unfaithful servant had left in the can was NOTHING! It was given to the FAITHFUL and the withdrawal was blocked from the blessing. Our UNFAITHFULNESS becomes a “blocker” to the withdrawal of the blessing.

Tomorrow we will next look at the next KEY in Withdrawal.  “PURITYThe Gateway to the Flow of the Blessing“. Lets put on our detective hats in start looking at the facts.

How Can We Withdraw The BLESSING?

Last week in my area of the world, we were receiving 60-70 mph wind gusts. I looked out the window and said to Dianne, “Look at the wind blow!” The wind chimes on our side port sounded like the bells of Westminster Cathedral. The leafless tree branches were  breaking off in the wind and since it was trash day, paper and tin cans were everywhere.  She casually came to the window, to see what I was seeing and said, “You can’t actually see the wind Mel. We are seeing the results of the wind…” or something like that.  We already have a definition of GLORY; “the manifestation of the Word seed”. What I saw last week was the Glory; or the manifestation of the wind. Whenever the word reflects the image, that is the GLORY. In Genesis 2:7-17, we see the GLORY OF THE GARDEN and the GLORY OF MAN. They both come from the Word of God. I want to go further in the WORD; from in the beginning, down the biblical pathways and see where it leads.

Revelation 22:2 says, “Through the middle of the broadway of the city; also, on either side of the river was the tree of life with its twelve varieties of fruit, yielding each month its fresh crop; and leaves of the tree were for healing and the restoration of the nations.”

In the Book of the Revelation, “the tree of life” had been moved from the beginning to heaven.  And now, descended to the holy city of Jerusalem. (Revelation 21:10)   Before I continue, I would like you to repeat aloud with me the following statements before moving on to “How Can I Withdraw The Blessing“.

SAY: I HAVE, the Blessing.

SAY:  I HAVE, the Blessing IN me.

I HAVE, the Blessing ON me.

I HAVE, the Blessing AROUND me.

The nature of the Blessing is in Proverbs 10:22:  “The blessing of the Lord–it makes truly rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.”  It is not the effects; it is the force behind it. It’s like the wind blowing outside. So “how can we withdraw The Blessing? How can I see it manifested? How can I draw it out?

Lets start the detective work by turning to Ephesians 1:3:  “May blessing be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) Who has BLESSED us in Christ with every spiritual (given by the Holy Spirit) blessing in the heavenly realm.”  We learned we have “The Blessing“; “I am BLESSED.”  Turn now to Galatians 3:13-14; 29. In these verses, we learn that we are all sons (and daughters) of God by FAITH, through Christ Jesus.  The BLESSING of God is IN ME; ON ME; AROUND ME. So where is the fruit or the Glory on some believers? If we can’t say it, if we don’t experience it.  Are we pregnant in The Blessing but walking in the curse? Is ‘something’ blocking The Blessing?

Proverbs 26:2 says, “Like a sparrow in her wandering, like a swallow in her flying, so the causeless curse does not alight.”  A curse doesn’t come without a cause. A curse is a “BLOCKER” and there has to be a foundation for it.    Numbers 23:8, 20 says, no one can curse what God has blessed.  Here comes another BUT…we who have been BLESSED can cause a foundation to be formed by not supporting a blessing.

Job 4: 8:  “As I myself have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble and mischief reap the same.”  You can cause a foundation; not supporting a blessing.

Job 36:7-9:  “He withdraws not His eyes from the righteous; BUT He sets them forever with kings upon the throne, and they are exalted. And if they are bound in fetters [of adversity] and held by cords of affliction,  Then He shows to them [the true character of] their deeds and their transgressions, that they have acted arrogantly [with presumption and self-sufficiency].”

There are 4-Ways we can withdraw the blessing from what has already been deposited through Christ Jesus.

#1.  OBEDIENCE in LOVE and The Word.

There is also reciprocal or opposite  ways to BLOCK THE BLESSING .

Lets look at OBEDIENCE V.S. DISOBEDIENCE.  Partial obedience and delayed obedience is still DISOBEDIENCE!                             Deuteronomy 11:26-28 discusses this question of obedience or disobedience.

“BEHOLD, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse–The blessing if you obey the commandments (God’s Word) of the Lord your God which I command you this day; And the curse if you will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God…”

Choose the obedience or the curse. Since God gave us a free will. Adam and Eve had a choice in the Garden. And our choice. “Choose disobedience and you receive the curse”. It all starts with wrong words. “Wrong words determines your wrong thinking, which determines your wrong emotions, which determines your wrong choices”.

FAITHFULNESS V.S. UNFAITHFULNESS is next.  Turn back to Galatians 3:13-14; 29 for another look at choices. We have learned by God’s Word, “I am blessed.” We also have been taught, in Proverbs 26:2, that the deposit has already been made BUTThe Blessing can be blocked; yet ‘a curse without a cause can’t happen’. Look at your life honestly; right where you are now and see where you stand in The Blessing; then turn to Proverbs 28:20.

“A faithful man shall abound with blessings, BUT he who makes haste to be rich [at any cost] shall not go unpunished.”

A faithful man shall abound. To be strict and through the performance of duty; steady in allegiance; dependable in performance. Can God trust in your faithfulness?  Faithfulness requires a test. It takes time and proving. Abound means to flow or richly supplied. If you are not dependable, that’s unfaithfulness and a blessing blocker.

Proverbs 13:11 says, “Wealth [not earned but] won in haste or unjustly or from the production of things for vain or detrimental use [such riches] will dwindle away, BUT when he who gathers little by little will increase [his riches].”  There are lessons to be learned. Wealth unearned v.s. getting wealth, little by little. FAITHFULNESS?

Proverbs 23:4 says,  “Weary not yourself to be rich; cease from your own [human] wisdom.”  Labor to be rich is labor in the wrong direction. Labor in the things God has already given us; HIS WORD!

I will continue my detective work in “How Can We Withdraw The Blessing?” when we meet together in “The Word Detective” blog. I will start looking for clues in I Corinthians 4:2; Matthew 25:14-28 and try to determine what “A Long Time” can mean.

The Origin of the GLORY

We have been looking in God’s Word at The Blessing; the ROOT, in my recent BLOGS. Today we will begin our detective work about, ” The Glory; the FRUIT”.

Turn to the gospel of Mark 4:23-24 to get to the root issue.

Verse 23:  “If any man has ears to hear, let him be listening and let him perceive and comprehend.”  Jesus continues his teaching,

Verse 24:  “AND He said to them, Be careful what you are hearing. The measure [of thought and study] you give [to the truth you hear] will be the measure [of virtue and knowledge] that comes back to you–and more [besides] will be given to you who hear.” What Jesus is trying to tell us is; ‘ if we don’t understand what we are hearing, we won’t be in the position to RECEIVE in what to do’. That’s powerful to me, I don’t know about you. Let’s go on to Mark 7:13 and uncover the real TRUTHS.

“Thus you are nullifying and making void and of NO EFFECT [the authority of] the Word of God through your tradition, which you [in turn] hand on. And many things of this kind you are doing.”

JESUS is talking about what happens with many Christians in todays churches. We are letting our traditional understanding of God’s Word rob us of the manifestation of His Glory; we keep passing down those traditions. For instance, our traditional understanding of the word, PEACE might read, “a state of tranquility, an absence of conflict among people.”  BUT what the word PEACE really means is, “nothing broken, nothing missing–wholeness”. We must let our bible define the bible!  UNDERSTANDING means, “comprehension or the intent of a thing.”  In total, the root issue of our investigation into “The Origin of the Glory” is having the right understanding ased only on the WORD of God.  The BIBLE is the plan for God’s redemption. That’s it! Plain and simple. We will now go to the Book of Genesis to look at the beginning of God’s plan and His first act.

Genesis 1:28:  “AND God blessed them and said, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it [using all its vast resources in the service of God and man]; and have dominion [authority] over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living creature that moves on earth.”

God’s first act was…He blessed them. HOW? In review of the word, “BLESSING“, we said it is “an empowerment”. It’s His blessing on our natural, or His super on our natural. When God says (His Word); we are BLESSED. So what then, does the word “GLORY” mean? “Heavy with weight” or the manifestation of The Blessing. Since the WORD is called SEED in the bible;  “By His stripes we are healed“, that is the Word seed.  The HEALING is the GLORY. In other words, when the SEED bears fruit; that’s the glory. The GLORY will be revealed! When God says it, we will see it. How do we know that is true? Turn with me now to the Book of Isaiah  40: 5.

“And the GLORY (His majesty and splendor) of the Lord shall be revealed, and ALL FLESH shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.”  As I mentioned, “when God says it, we (“ALL FLESH”) will see it.”   The Word precedes the blessing and the blessing brings forth the GLORY.  The more we can understand God’s Word, all of the traditional misunderstanding we have sown  into our hearts will pass. At this point, I hope you are not confused in the mining or understanding of the Truth.

We are next going to look briefly at several word seeds in Genesis 1:3-4, 6, 11-12, 14-16. Turn there if you haven’t done so already.

Verse 3 says, “And God said,…”, then in verse 4, “And God saw…”  Verse 6 says, “And God said…” Then in verses 11-12, “And God said…And God saw…”  and finally in verses 14-16, “And God said…” , “And it was so.”  God said words and then things were made.

In Genesis 2:7, “Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath or spirit of life, and man became a living being.”  I would like to think, when God “breathed“, that it may have meant that “God said” words, like a soft whisper; and “man became…” Why would I think that? Because of what we discovered in Genesis 1. God is the same yesterday, the same today and the same in eternity. Can I know for sure that was the way man came to being? NO, BUT..  First the Word, then the Blessing and then the GLORY. Can you see the thread connection?

Turn with me to the Gospel of John 1:14, a very familiar verse to most of us..

“And the Word (Christ) became flesh (human, incarnate) and tabernacled (fixed His tent of flesh, lived awhile) among us; and we [actually] saw HIS GLORY, such GLORY as an only begotten son receives from his father, full of grace and truth.”  I capitalized the word glory to emphasize its meaning. (My Amplified Version of God’s word doesn’t).  The Word became flesh, so we had the First Adam in Genesis and now the Last Adam. Now go with me to Hebrews 1:3;  for further investigation of the word GLORY.

“He (Jesus) is the sole expression of the GLORY of God [the Light-being, the out-raying or radiance of the divine]. and He is the perfect imprint and very image of [God’s] nature, upholding and propelling the universe by His mighty WORD of power…”

There is… “The Origin of the Glory“.  God’s GLORY of man in Adam and God’s GLORY of Christ Jesus, His Son.  Lets  review what we found and learned today. I want to end with some definitions of God’s WORD, based on how the Bible defines them. NOT how you and I have defined them before.

GLORY is, “the manifestation of the seed”.

UNDERSTANDING is, “the comprehension and intention of a thing”.

THE BLESSING OF GOD is, “an empowerment that will cause us to succeed in everything around us”.

WORD—>BLESSING—>GLORY.  Glory is the manifested WORD.

Tomorrow I will continue with , “How can we make withdrawals from the deposit; The BLESSING? I will keep on, keeping on in  this theme until the Holy Spirit says, MOVE ON Mel. He wants us all to have UNDERSTANDING in THE WORD, THE BLESSING, and THE GLORY.

When I look back at my life, I can see how many times “circumstances” effected my decisions. My “circumstances”  many times, would frame my attitude, my confidence and even my physical appearance. When you are going through ‘something’, have you ever looked at yourself in a mirror? I have and was suprised at what I saw. I certainly didn’t look like I was “BLESSED“. Can others, who are around you be effected by your appearance? Can they see and know that you have The Blessing? It can make a big difference in your future relationships if there isn’t any “FRUIT” showing. When I finished our investigation in God’s Word yesterday, looking at the “ROOT“, I said we would pick up some revealing clues in Genesis 39:1-6. Evidence that will unveil how “circumstance” affects our “FRUIT” and how others will react.

Genesis 39,Verses 2-3:  “BUT the Lord was with Joseph, and he [though a slave] was a successful and prosperous man, and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.  And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all that he did to flourish and succeed in his hand.”

We know that Joseph had acquired The Blessing previously. We also see that Joseph was in a difficult circumstance, to say the least. He was a slave in a foreign country and housed in the chief executioner’s villa. Look how The Blessing in Joseph, on Joseph and around Joseph affected his circumstance.  The boss, his master saw something in him. He could see “that the Lord was with him and the Lord made all that he did to flourish and succeed in his hand.”  What kind of witnesses could we be to others, if they could see in us what Potiphar saw in Joseph? Your answers to your employer’s questions, could open salvation doors and start a spiritual fire in your city. Potiphar learned that no matter where he put Joseph, there was increase; there was promotion. Now I never said that in our circumstances, there would be an easy way out. Satan wants to seduce you away from The Blessing. He doesn’t want anyone to see The Blessing. Look at Genesis 39:7 and see how the enemy can add to an existing circumstance by temptations. Have you ever wanted to give up, cave in and quit during stress and pressures in your particular situation? I sure have; many times.

“THEN after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and she said, Lie with me.”

Joseph refuses her offer in verses 8-9, giving her the explanation that what she wanted to do was a “sin against God“.  Now we know from reading about Joseph that he was an attractive young man in Genesis 39:6. He had been brought into Potiphar’s household and put in charge of everything except, what he was to eat. A Hebrew man’s food customs were completely different from an Egyptians. And, there might have been confidence in Joseph’s duties but Potiphar didn’t want him to touch the food! Honesty, integrity, faithfulness, sobriety, and similar characteristics are genuine assets to any employer; and such are the FRUITS of Christian faith and obedience. It may even be that, because of these attributes, the employee will occasionally have opportunity to give a word of testimony to his “boss” as to the true source of The Blessing that attends his activities.  Although adultery was subject to severe legal penalties in Egypt, it apparently was often tacitly condoned and was not uncommon. In my detective work this week, I found something interesting in The Genesis Record by Henry M. Morris.  Potiphar, to whom Joseph was sold, was captain of Pharaoh’s bodyguard, and also probably in charge of political executions ordered by Pharaoh. He is also called an “officer” of Pharaoh, the Hebrew word being saris, meaning “eunuch,” or “chamberlain.” It was evidently customary in ancient pagan countries, beginning with Sumeria, to require prominent officers associated with the king’s court to be castrated. Now finding this evidence doesn’t rationalize the circumstances that both Potiphar’s wife and Joseph find themselves in. With such an array of rationalizations easily at hand, it would have been natural to yield to the temptation presented. Now it might not sound spiritual, but God gave Joseph a 3-letter word. R-U-N! And Joseph obeyed in verse 12. If you don’t know by now, I like the “BUT’s” in God’s word. After Potiphar’s wife tells him her elaborated made up story, Joseph’s fate is sealed in verse 20. Or was it?

Verse 21,  “BUT the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him mercy and loving-kindness and gave him favor…”  Joseph had the ROOT or The Blessing; his promotion or the FRUIT showed up in verse 22 and prosperity in whatever he did is seen in verse 23.  How about your circumstance right now? You might have lost your job BUT…you might not be able to pay your bills BUT…  While Joseph was in jail, he didn’t know he was going to be Prime Minister to Egypt. You, right now; where are you in your circumstance? Could you be 30 days, 14 days, one hour, one minute, 40 seconds away from a promotion. Don’t give up, cave in and quit! Your break through is coming. The Word of God tells us that. There is prophesy on us in God’s word. Turn to Isaiah 61:6-9:

“BUT you shall be called priests of the Lord, people will speak of you as the ministers of our God. You shall eat the wealth of the nations, and the glory [the Fruit] shall be yours. Instead of your former shame you shall have a twofold recompense; instead of dishonor and reproach [your people] shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess DOUBLE [what they had forfeited]; everlasting joy shall be theirs.”

NO ROOT, NO FRUIT”. As believers, we must know and understand “The Blessing” as God intended it to be.  Isaiah prophesied, that through our faithfulness and obedience in our adversities, we “shall have a twofold recompense…possessing DOUBLE” what we have lost!  If you will NOT receive The BLESSING then you will not see The GLORY.

When we continue next week, in “The Blessing” and “The Glory“; The ROOT and the FRUIT, we will concentrate on the FRUIT. “The Origin of the Glory“.

The Blessing is the Root

We know from yesterday’s detective work, that Abram had received “The Blessing” from God. After he received it, he became “a blessing” to his family and even to his tag-along nephew, Lot.  I also know from the story in Genesis that Abram and Lot’s prosperity from the blessing, had grown so much, that “the land was not able to nourish and support them so they could dwell together”. (Genesis 13:6)

Strife had also grown in the prosperity.  Jealousy between the members in Abram’s extended family and Lot’s group grew every day. Remember when you were a kid, in amongst other kids in the neighborhood? Jealousy seemed to raise its ugly head now and then. It did when I was growing up. One kid would say, “did you know, my parents just got a new car this week.”  And I might have replied, “So. Our car isn’t new…but it has six NEW stereo speakers. How many does your NEW car have?” You know, ‘trying to keep up with the Jones’. This conversation might even proceed to the point of physical retribution. This same scenario, could have taken place between Abram’s family and Lot’s family. Abram who had received The Blessing, said to Lot in Genesis 13, “let there be no strife, I beg you, between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are relatives.” Abram gave his nephew a choice. If you choose the land of “there”, I will go in the opposite direction. We know from the story, where “there” was (verses 10-12). Remember that wrong decisions— determine wrong actions.

After Lot chooses to live in the Jordan Valley, in the city of Sodom; the Lord tells Abram to look all around. Verse 15, “For all the land which you see I will give to you and to your posterity forever.” This is the Abrahamic Covenant. A promise from the Lord that can’t be broken…EVER!

I think most of us know the story of Lot and his family’s experiences in the Jordan River Valley [Sodom and Gomorah in Genesis 14]. I will pick up the story again in Genesis 14:16.  Abram was called in to rescue Lot and his family from the wicked kings of the land. Sounds like a fairy tale here,  but if you are a believer of God’s Word, you know that you know that you know; the story is the FACT.

You are probably wondering and saying to yourself, “what does all this have to do with The Blessing?” While we are looking at Genesis 14, drop down to verse 18-20.

“Melchizedek king of Salem [later called Jerusalem] brought out bread and wine [for their nourishment]; he was the priest of God Most High, And he blessed him and said, BLESSED (favoured with blessings, made blissful, joyful) be Abram by God Most High, Possessor and Maker of heaven and earth, And blessed, praised and glorified be God Most High, Who has given your foes into your hand! And [Abram] gave him a tenth of all [he had taken].”

Now, turn to Hebrews 6:20. I have done some of the detective work and will attempt to tie all this together after reading the verse.

“Where JESUS has entered in for us [in advance], a Forerunner having become a High Priest forever after the (with the rank) of Melchizedek.” JESUS is our High Priest in the order of Melchizedek. Jesus has the ROOT. When we give our tithe, or the fruit from “The Blessing”, we get something in return; every time. We get “a blessing”. It isn’t which is first but it all happens simultaneously!

This is what I found in my investigation of the Word. In Genesis 14:18-20 two clues; Abram had the tithe and Melchizedek has the blessing. “The Root” or “The Fruit?  You get a blessing every time you give the tithe. The issue here is around the tithe. It’s all about the ROOT and not the FRUIT; not the money. The Blessing is the empowerment to be successful in every area of life. Are things a little clearer now or muddier? If it is still not clear, go back with me now to the New Testament, to the Book of Ephesians 1: 3.

“May blessing be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) Who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual (given by the Holy Spirit) blessing in the heavenly realm!”

God has blessed us ( past tense) and it is the deposit for the believers. The BLESSING is in me, on me and around me. The Blessing is the Root to the Fruit or the deposit!  You will have to put some “detective tennis shoes” if you want to dig deeper.  Turn back to Genesis 17:16.  God is revealing to Abraham (God changed Abram name to Abraham); his wife’s new name. It was Sarai and now God has given her new name to be Sarah [Princess].

“And I will bless her and give you a son also by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people’s shall come from her.”  After The Blessing or empowerment, Sarah would not be barren any longer. When we are learning to connect with The Blessing, God’s super on our natural, we become super natural. It all started in the beginning with Adam. “The Blessing” was first placed on Adam. Sin entered into the picture and became a “blessing blocker” until Noah. Then Shem passed it on to Abram.  We pick up the detective story next in Genesis 25:5-6.

“And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac. But to the sons of his concubines [Hagar and Keturah] Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them to the east country, away from Isaac his son [of promise].”

Abraham gave ALL he had to his son. Not some of what he had but ALL. And to his other sons by concubines, he gave gifts. After Abraham’s spirit was released in death at the ripe old age of 175, did The Blessing continue? Genesis 25:11 says,  “After the death of Abraham, God blessed his son Isaac…” Will God renege on His covenant promises?  Genesis 26:3-6 gives the reassurance to Isaac, that the blessing will go on. In Verse 3, God says, “and I will be with you”. That means that the blessing or the root was in place. God then gives Isaac an important reminder to his father’s receiving the blessing in verse 5.

“For Abraham listened to and obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commands, My statutes, and My laws.”

God’s Word tell us that obedience will give birth to “”the blessing. Partial or delayed obedience is still disobedience and a “blessing blocker”. If you think that you might be living in lack and not “the blessing”, then it’s time to look at your self and check. Are their “blessing blockers” in your spiritual life. The Blessing IS the Root to your successes.  As Genesis 26:28-29 says, get ‘hooked-upwith the blessed! Watch and have faith in the results mentioned; to Abraham, to Lot, to Issac and all of their families.

Tomorrow we will look at another hero of the bible who had The Blessing. We will take some clues from Joseph in Genesis 39. If you want to do some detective work yourselves first, be my guest.
