What GOD Thinks About War

Scripture Deuteronomy 20:1-20; Ecclesiastes 3:8

Ecclesiastes 3:1; 8 Amplified bible (AMP):

[1] TO EVERYTHING there is a season, and a time for every matter or purpose under heaven;  [8] A time to love and a time to hate, A TIME FOR WAR and A TIME FOR PEACE .

Many Christians today are saying that there are no circumstances under which we should go to war–or using the current vernacular: “Boots on the ground”.

As a church, and we who trust in God, are the CHURCH, need to understand when that time is and what God says about this issue.

There are many opinions about this subject.  We live in a time of moral relativism; where we hear in public or in private, “I think what I think and you think what you think.”

So I don’t want to write about my opinion of WAR–

I just want us together, to go to the Bible and find out what God has to say about this subject.  Afterall, His opinion is the only one that really counts.

FIRST OF ALL, GOD DOESN’T LOVE WAR!!  God is not hungry for war.  That’s NOT the God of the Bible.

In some RELIGIONS, you have a god, little “g”, or gods that are WAR LOVERS, but you don’t find that in the Bible.  Look at the lyrics (words) to the Psalm (song) in…

PSALM 68 (NLT):

[30] “Rebuke these enemy nations–these wild animals lurking in the weeds, this herd of bulls among the weaker calves,  Make them bring bars of silver in humble tribute. Scatter the nations that delight in war.”

This says that there are some nations that enjoy WAR.  God says He will punish these nations.

We need to clearly understand that WAR is NOT a good thing.  WAR is simply the result of our own fallen, sinful nature.  At the very ROOT of the way SIN is.

Even though God doesn’t love WAR, we also find in the Bible that God sometimes Commands WAR:  1 Samuel 15:1-9

Verses 1-3:

[1] SAMUEL TOLD Saul,  The Lord sent me to anoint you king over His people Israel. Now listen and heed the words of the Lord.  [2] Thus says the Lord of hosts, “I have considered and will punish what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way when [Israel] came out of Egypt.  [3] Now go and smite Amalek and utterly destroy all they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, infant and suckling ox and sheep, camel and donkeys”  (AMP).

So WAR is sometimes necessary.  Why would God COMMAND His people to go to WAR?

Because, there will not be PEACE without WAR!

In his book Fuzzy Memories, Jack Handey writes:

“There use to be this bully who would demand my lunch money every day.  Since I was smaller, I would give it to him.  Then I decided to fight back.  I started taking karate lessons.  But then the karate lesson guy said I had to start paying him five dollars a lesson.  So I just went back to paying the bully.”

Too many people feel it easier just to pay the bully than it is to LEARN how to defeat him.

In America’s current situation in the world, we can’t afford to pay the bully. We must defeat them!

Sure, it’s easier to just pay the bully’s, but standing for what is right is more important than a life of PEACE & COMFORT.

I also found in my investigation into God’s Word, that God STRENGTHENS HIS PEOPLE for War:  Leviticus 26:7-8 (AMP)

[7]  And you shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword.

[8]  Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight; your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.

In time of WAR, we don’t have to RELY on our own strength and determination, but we understand that God is on the side of the RIGHTEOUS.

When we STAND together as a nation, as people, for God–I know by the POWER of His Word, He will stand for us.

We see in the Bible that God approves of WAR also because…

He TRAINS His people for WAR.  He is the One who prepared His people for the battle.

2 Samuel 22:35 (NLT):

(God) trains my hand for battle, my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

Whenever God calls you to do something, whatever it is, you can be sure that He will give you all you need to accomplish it.

And when He sent His people to WAR, where was He?  Does He just stay behind?  Does He wait for the soldier to return?

NO!

God involves Himself in War.  He goes with the ARMY!

Deuteronomy 1:30 (AMP):

The Lord your God Who goes before you.  He will fight for you just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes.”

GOD WILL WIN THE WAR!

Proverbs 21:31 (NIV):

“The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the LORD.”

God has NEVER come in second place.  He is the clear winner of every Battle; God is always the Victor!

And He says, when we do our best and prepare for the worst from the enemy, we can TRUST GOD to bring the victory.  He will WIN THE CONFLICT!!

God doesn’t want us to enter a battle…a WAR blindly.  God gives us His rules, HisGods-Blueprint Blueprint of engagement ahead of time.

There is a RIGHT and a WRONG time for WAR.

There’s also a RIGHT AND WRONG way to fight a WAR.

God gives very specific instructions which I discovered and listed in Deuteronomy 20.

1.  DON’T BE AFRAID  (Deut. 20:1-4):

(verse 4) –  “For the Lord your God is He Who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to save you.”

Remember, God is with us; there’s no need to FEAR!

2.  ONLY THE BRAVE ARE TO FIGHT  (Deut. 20:5-8):

(verse 8) –  “What man is fearful and fainthearted? Let him return to his house, lest [because of him] his brethren’s [minds and] hearts faint as does his own.”  (AMP)

God says that anyone who doesn’t have COURAGE will be a hindrance and a discouragement to other soldiers, so let them go home.

The God says,

3.  GIVE PEACE A CHANCE  (Deut. 20:10-11):

(verse 10)  “When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.”

The people of a city that surrendered not to be harmed, would become subject to Israel.  In WAR THEORY, this is known as the LAST RESORT.

You should go to WAR only as a “last resort.”

See if there is anything else you can do, diplomacy or economic pressure or anything else.  And certainly, with America and their allies’ current circumstances, it seems we have tried every means available including “red lines” and it hasn’t made a difference.

4.  DON’T DESTROY THE LAND IN A RAGE OF BATTLE  (Deut. 20:19-20):

[19] When you besiege a city for a long time, making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by using an ax on them, for you can eat their fruit; you must not cut them down, for is the tree of the field a man, that it should be besieged by you?

[20] Only the trees which you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down, that you may build siege works against the city that makes war with you until it falls.

I meditated on the words of these two verses for some time.  “Axes”, “fruit trees”, “siege works”…  I asked myself,

“What other country wins a war and goes back in and spends millions of dollars rebuilding that country and helping them back on their feet?”

That is the kind of country I live in, that sees every person as valuable with a potential to repent and live in a peaceful future.

And then fifth, and this is the one that most people have trouble with if they don’t surrender:

5.  DON’T ALLOW THEM TO CONTINUE LIVING (Deut. 20:16-17):

[16] But in the cities of these people which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes.  [17] But you shall utterly exterminate them…as the Lord your God has commanded you,

Did you ever hear your mom, or someone else’s parent say, “I brought you into the world, and I can take you out of it.”  That is true of God:  He brought us in and He can take us out.  He is the CREATOR of ALL LIFE.

LIFE is a GIFT…but SIN is serious business.  We need to understand the seriousness of SIN.

The simple fact is, none of us deserve the LIFE we are living or the next breath we are breathing.  But because of God’s GRACE…He gives us LIFE!

The NATIONS were so corrupted by paganism and immorality that they DESERVED God’s punishment, like Sodom and Gomorrah.  But God was using His people, instead of FIRE from heaven.

Also, complete destruction was the order of the day.  They were to be totally wiped out,

Otherwise, they will teach you to follow all the detestable things they do in worshipping their gods, and you will sin against the Lord your God”  (Deut. 20:18 – NIV bible).

And once again, TIME WOULD TELL that God knew just what He was talking about.

ISRAEL didn’t completely DESTROY the citizens of Canaan.  And generation after generation were led into IDOLATRY and away from God by the people Israel allowed to survive.

This was true of the Nazis during the World War II era.  When people think about the HOLOCAUST, they think only about the crimes against JEWS, but they were also looking to eliminate CHRISTIANITY.

I am seeing similarities facing us today if we allow EVIL to go unchallenged.

We’ll see our children and their children in chains and wondering why we didn’t stand up for righteousness and truth in the face of evil.  That’s NOT God’s will for America.

God wants to continue to use us, as He has in years past, to SHARE the Gospel with our world.  Those who would destroy us, hate us because they HATE OUR GOD–they reject Jesus and they want to wipe CHRISTIANITY off the face of this earth.

But today, God is CALLING US to stand up to this evil.  So as Christians, how then should we respond to WAR?

First, and foremost, TRUST in God.

During these times, when FEAR of terrorism runs rampant, we need not panic, but instead…put our CONFIDENCE in God:

“The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace and remain at rest”  (Exodus 14:14).

Secondly, and this concept may be hard to grasp, is to SUBMIT to the government.

The Bible tells us in Romans (13:1-5), that God puts the government in place to PROTECT the people.

As Christians, we are to SUBMIT to the AUTHORITY of the government.

Now that said, we need to understand that we are to obey the government unless…it is in clear violation of the Word of God.  Our allegiance is first to God!

There may be times when we have to OBEY GOD rather than our government, but only if it is clear and direct violation of God’s word!

Third, the POWER released when we PRAY.

I find it difficult to pray for our government leaders.  There, I said it!  But we need to PRAY more than ever before.

PRAY for those in the military and their families.  And yes, PRAY for our leaders as well. Our feelings shouldn’t determine the extent of our prayer lives:

Psalm 112:8 says, “His heart is established and steady, he will not be afraid while he waits to see his desire established upon his adversaries.”

And fourth, we should look forward to the day when WARS will end!

Micah 4:1-3 (NIV Bible):

dreamstime_xs_15945369[1] IN THE last days the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established as chief among the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and peoples will stream to it.

[2] Many nations will come and say,  “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of God of Jacob.  He will teach us His ways, so that we may walk in His paths.”  The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.  [3] He will judge between many peoples and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide.  They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.  Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.  [4] Every man will sit under his own vine and under his own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, for the LORD Almighty has spoken.

There will come a day, when there will be NO MORE WAR, NO MORE BLOODSHED.

Not in this lifetime, but in eternity.  That is our HOPE as Christians; a hope of expectancy…with an outstretched neck.

GOD says that the price we pay for our SIN is death.  DEATH is separation from God.  And when we SIN, what we are saying to God is, “No thanks, I can do it my way.”  And that puts us at WAR with Him.

In Romans 3:23, God says that every one of us has sinned.

When God JUDGES our sin, it gives us the taste of life without Him–a world full of DEATH, SUFFERING and WAR.

But you can experience PEACE in your life today.  That PEACE comes from a relationship with JESUS.

Put an end to THE WAR in your life by trusting in JESUS today!

Things Aren’t Always As They Seem

Looking At The World From A Different Perspective:

2 Timothy 3:1-5 (AMP):

[1] BUT UNDERSTAND THIS, that in the last days there will set in perilous times of great stress and trouble–hard to deal with and hard to bear.  [2] For people will be lovers of self and [utterly] self-centered lovers of money and aroused by an inordinate (greedy) desire for wealth, proud and arrogant and contemptuous boasters. They will be abusive (blasphemous, scoffers); disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy and profane.  [3] [They will be] without natural (human) affection (callous and inhuman);  relentless–admitting of no truce or appeasement.  [They will be] slanderers–false accusers, trouble makers; intemperate and loose in morals and conduct, uncontrolled and fierce, haters of good.  [4] [They will be] treacherous (betrayers), rash [and] inflated with self-conceit. [They will be] lovers of sensual pleasures and vain amusements more than and rather than lovers of God.  [5] For [although] they hold a form of piety (true religion), they deny and reject and are strangers to the power of it–their conduct belies the genuineness of their profession.  Avoid [all] such people–turn away from them.

A Praying Mantis & A Tree Limb
A Praying Mantis & A Tree Limb

Looking at the world from a BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE, it is not difficult to reach this conclusion from the title to this blog-post: “Things Aren’t Always As They Seem”–

Although this planet is inhabited by more than six billion human beings, there are only two types of people: Those who BELONG TO CHRIST and those WHO DON’T.

Now that, at first, may seem like an oversimplification, but the fact is reflected in…

1 Corinthians 10:21:

You cannot drink the Lord’s cup and the demon’s cup. You cannot partake of the Lord’s table and the demons’ table.”

Unfortunately, in comparison to the rest of the world, the TRUE CHURCH, that is to say, ALL BELIEVERS not willing to compromise, do not compromise their FAITH by following the norms and the evil current running through this world, is a FACT.

It is a sad fact to think that out of more than six billion people, only a small group or percentage will be SAVED.

Look at the words JESUS speaks in clarity–John 14:6:  “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me.”

THIS WORLD is full of people who are just like described in our text (2 Tim. 3:1-5), appear to be one thing, but in all reality something very different.

The world is full of people who profess to be “Christians”; people who with their mouths loudly (and some, not so loudly) DECLARE they are men and women of God, but in REALITY are very far from God.

How do I know this?

Because there are numerous doctrines and teachings that appear to be beautiful and good, but when examined against the Truth, the Word of God, quickly find that there are DOCTRINES & TEACHINGS designed to separate men from God’s presence.

The apostle Paul tells us here to SEPARATE ourselves from them–yet way before Paul’s instruction to us in Timothy, Jesus warned us to stay alert, “take heed”; don’t let the world catch anyone napping.

Mark 13:21-23 (NASB):

[21] “And then if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ; or ‘Behold, He is there’; do not believe him;  [22] For false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order, if possible, to lead the elect astray.  [23] “But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance.”

At this point, I want to take a pause–a “time out”.  I am NOT stating nor implying we should JUDGE and CONDEMN someone.  None of us are worthy to judge anyone!  There is but on Judge!  (John 5:22-23)

I want to make myself very clear on the fact that we are not called to JUDGE or CONDEMN anyone because they may be confused or find themselves trapped in a RELIGION or a SECT.  Let’s always remember when we find ourselves in a situation to EVANGELIZE…our first words must never be “you are going to hell.”

Our responsibility is to PREACH God’s TRUTH.

So I am NOT implying that we must judge, rather what I am trying to convey to you is we can not trust everything that we see or hear.

The MAJORITY of people, I believe, allow themselves to be led by first impressions, being it positive or negative, and these influence their attitude and behavior toward others.  How do I know this?  Because I am in a spiritual battle as I write–concerning my attitude, my first impressions of others.

If we are honest with ourselves, we are ALL GUILTY of doing just this.  Look at what JESUS tells us regarding our attitude toward others; our judging based on first impressions or otherwise:

Matthew 7:1-2:

[1]  DO NOT judge and criticize and condemn others, so that you may not be judged and criticized and condemned yourselves.  [2] For just as you judge and criticize and condemn others, you will be judged and criticized and condemned, and in accordance with the measure you [use to] deal out to others, it will be dealt out again to you.

But then the question arises in our minds, “How can we distinguish between good and the bad without counting on appearances?”

The LORD tells in Matthew 7:15 (VOICE):

“Along the way, WATCH OUT for false prophets.  They will come to you in sheep’s clothing, but understand that quaint and innocent wool, they are hungry wolves.”

I capitalized two words in this verse, for the KEY to answering the question is to “WATCH OUT” !!!

There are many people in this world who appear to be something that they are not. People that disguise themselves by wearing masks of religions, that seem to speak eloquently with fancy words, but “inwardly they are ravenous wolves.”

WATCH OUT!

There is but ONE WAY that we can prevent ourselves from being deceived; to distinguish these persons from the rest.

EXAMINE THE FRUITS that they produce (Matthew 7:20):

“You will fully know them by their fruits.”

In other words, although my first impression may be good or bad, although the appearance of a group or individual is good or bad, as a true believer, I have to start by learning to wait on God.  This “waiting”, many will say, places the BELIEVER in Christ Jesus at a disadvantage.

But in reality, the opposite is true.

What happens is, that once we receive conviction, we separate ourselves from all of those things that we have learned that displease God; we will be accused by many saying that a TRUE CHRISTIAN is called to LOVE.  That as Christians, we are CALLED TO LOVE GOD and our neighbors.  That we are CALLED TO FORGIVE even those that may have seriously offended us in the past, and because of the “callings”, we can never distance ourselves from, or stop sharing with, a particular group or individual.

I can tell you that there is some TRUTH to these types of accusations; a Christian Believer IS called to love God and to love his neighbor (Matthew 22:37-40).

Therefore, ONE TRUTH IS…Christians are CALLED to LOVE & FORGIVE.

BUT another great truth is that Christians are NOT CALLED to be Accomplices; Doctrines, rituals, and Sects that serve only to drive a wedge between man and God.

Our responsibility is to TEACH the TRUTH, to PREACH the Gospel of Salvation through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

BUT if they are unwilling to HEAR, unwilling to ACCEPT the Truth, wishing to continue in those things that don’t please God as pointed out in 2 Timothy 3:1-5, then we are to SEPARATE ourselves from them.

Look at how this instruction from Jesus is clearly reflected in Matthew 7:6 when we read…hqdefault

“Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy.  Don’t throw your pearls to pigs!  They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you”  ~ New Living Translation (NLT).

WE MUST BE CAREFUL–WATCH OUT!!!

We must be take care of what God has given us–our “PEARLS” of wisdom and understanding.

Read in Revelations 2:11 at how our Lord tells us,  “Behold I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.”

We must AVOID those persons who disguise themselves to confuse us; we must SEPARATE ourselves from this wicked and evil world, no matter the form we see it appear.

But we must also EXAMINE ourselves very closely to find the FRUITS that we are bearing are in fact pleasing to God.  [See Footnote [i] for a reference to read]

We must examine ourselves to find, if perhaps, that we have become so preoccupied with those around us that our life has stopped testifying of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I…we have to examine ourselves closely, because we find that by CRITICIZING, and HATING those around us, we must realize that we are not bearing GOOD FRUIT.  We must be very careful with what we HEAR & SEE, we have to TEST EVERYTHING using the Word of God.

But just as important, is our self-examination; we have to EXAMINE ourselves and discover if our life is truly hidden in Christ, or perhaps just hidden.

APPEARANCES can be deceiving, so let’s be very careful that we may not be deceiving ourselves in the process.

When Is “Enough”, Enough?

6a011168574e19970c01539046a676970bI was in a local pet store one day, wandering up and down the aisles, looking for the unusual, when I heard a constant rattling…almost annoying sound.

And the mystery was revealed.  HAMSTERS running in their little wheel as it spinned, running with all their might, but never getting anywhere.  They are running, the wheel is spinning, but nothing else changes.

In my close observation, I knew the spinning wheel is there for their exercise, but I wondered if the hamster might be thinking to himself when the wheel starts spinning,

“Yeah, I’m on my way now. Nothing can stop me.  I’m breaking out of this joint!”

The HAMSTER follows his trails in the cage, runs in the spinning wheel, giving everything he’s got, only that he hasn’t moved from inside the cage where he’s trapped.  There is nothing he can do to break the cycle on his own because there is a much more powerful, larger being, with vastly more intelligence already determined how his life will be spent and where he will go.  Sad commentary if you are a “pet” lover.

Many times, I too have felt like the little hamster;  I’m running in circles like the hamster but never getting anywhere.

That brings me to the Scripture found in Deuteronomy 2:1-3:

[1] THEN WE turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord directed me; and for many days we journeyed around Mount Seir.

[2] And the Lord spoke to me [Moses], saying  [3] You have roamed around this mountain country long enough; turn northward.

I want to direct you to look at a story presented in Deuteronomy; of a people in God’s Word that were caught in the same spinning wheel of life.  They seemed to be going nowhere because they had lost direction and just kept running in the same circle.

stock-photo-illustration-of-wheel-121045525

God had plainly set their path but for nearly 40 years they were on a journey to…how should I say it…NOWHERE!

Finally, the day came when they realized they didn’t have the answers; they had no true direction; and that someone greater than themselves had to direct their path if they were ever going to be anything other than mindless runners on the spinning wheel of life.

The sad part is that countless thousands had died in the process of running in circles while never finding the real meaning of existence, dying in a vast wilderness with their dreams and hopes lost forever.

God had made a way when He delivered them from the SLAVE PITS of Egypt.  A way for them with a greater PURPOSE, A DESTINY that would change their lives forever...IF… they would only follow His direction and remain FAITHFUL to His Purpose for their lives.

But FREEDOM has a price; and TRUE FREEDOM demands limitations.  Freedom without limitations becomes ANARCHY, which I see happening in our city streets today.

TRUE FREEDOM can only be found by following GOD’S PLAN; and everything else only leads to another form of SLAVERY; either to SIN within ourselves; or to the controlling hand of someone else who will dictate to us the conditions of life.

We will truly need a FIRM FOUNDATION to rely on; that won’t be shaken or changed with a determination to ‘stick to it’!  Of course, the only TRUE FOUNDATION is found in Jesus Christ, our Savior and the Word of God that will never fail, nor ever change.

Psalms 37:23-24:

[23] The steps of a [good] man are directed and established by the Lord when He delights in his way [and He busies Himself with his every step].

[24] Though he falls, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord grasps his hand in support and upholds him.

God never promised us a PATH without a few falls.

In service, in ministry to the saints or to the surrounding community.  He never said that life would be easy, not facing problems.

What He did PROMISE was that we would never be forsaken and even when we fall, the Lord will keep us by His hand.

God ALWAYS provides a way for FREEDOM to reign and for the VICTORY to be won if we just keep on, keep’n on in following Him.

ISRAEL began their journey; but they had much to learn, and so God predetermined them to take a long journey to get to their final destination:

Deuteronomy 2:1

THEN WE turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord directed me; and for many days we journeyed around Mount Seir.

03990_000_bible-photo-2

From the pits of BONDAGE in Egypt, relating to our DELIVERANCE from the grip of SIN under the hand of Satan, Israel proceeded into the WILDERNESS, and area called Mount Seir where they wandered for many days, in fact, for 40 years.  They just kept going around in circles, moving their camp many times along the way.  Sometimes staying in one place for a few years, and then moving to another when the water ran dry, or the grass was gone for their animals.

I wonder how many times ISRAEL experienced a deja-vu moment in their wanderings?

How many times did one Israelite look at another and say,

“You know, I think we’ve been here before.  Something about this place looks familiar and I know I’ve climbed this mountain before.  I feel just like we are running in CIRCLES and nobody knows which way to go.”

I see the same thing happening in the world today.

Mankind has no clue of direction; history just keeps repeating itself and we don’t learn the lessons of the past.

The PATH has already been laid in front of us and we begin to wonder in our own understanding leading us to nowhere.  Our world has lost its way; no man has the ability to LEAD the human race to a place of perfect peace and safety; and every day the race just gets faster while the destination more obscure.

The same thing happens in the CHURCH as well, for we are the church.

Christians often express their concerns and just keep running in circles, never accomplish what they want to in their lives.  I know this to be true because I have been there before.

That place in MINISTRY where doubt and a critical spirit raises its ugly head...A MOUNTAIN blocking the progress of my journey.  Every day seems to end in disappointment and frustration because nothing ever seems to change.

Some of us struggle with the same old self-created HABITS and the WHEEL is spinning; we are trying as hard as we can but nothing is changing.

Let me give some encouragement in the Lord if you are in this position of “wheel spinning”–going around in circles.

Just keep on running, but run where God tells you to run.

The BAD HABITS may be A BAD TEMPER; A CRITICAL SPIRIT (I’m guilty!); LACK OF SELF-CONTROL…etc.

The BAD HABITS start out as mole hills and become mountains because we won’t quit talking about them.

In effect, we just keep CIRCLING Mount Seir just like Israel did for all those years.  The march goes on, time passes, but nothing seems to really change.  When is “Enough” enough?

And the LORD spoke to me saying, “You have roamed around this mountain long enough; turn northward”  (vs. 2, 3).

Things began to change for ISRAEL, and all the things in your life are changing as well.

Sometimes the CHANGE happens so slowly its unnoticeable at first, but eventually the CHANGE will be great.

Israel’s attitude changed one step at a time.  With each step forward they drew closer to the end of their journey.  Like the old saying, “How do you begin a journey of a thousand miles? By taking the first step.”

And so it is with our walk with JESUS.

Those whose FAITH is too weak, fall by the wayside as the SEED of the gospel stolen from the heart; they will die right beside the path of life.

But the strong in the LORD, those who ‘sell out’ to God; serve Him with all their heart, mind, and soul and will remain FAITHFUL to the end; they will not only SURVIVE the JOURNEY…but will become VICTORIOUS over ALL THINGS!  (Luke 1:37)

God doesn’t give up on His people.  Though many never saw their PROMISE LAND; never occupied that land; God never forsook ISRAEL.

God won’t give up on you or me either!!  We are going to WIN the battle.  Romans 8:37 says, “Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him [Jesus] Who loved us.”  Have you ever heard of a “CONQUEROR” who ever lost a battle?  If they did, then they wouldn’t be called “conquerors”.

Whatever you are going through right now, you are going to OVERCOME this mountain in your life; if you just remain FAITHFUL until the race is won.

It’s time to quit circling around MOUNT SEIR.  Enough is enough!  Move on!!!

The ISRAELITE’S backs were facing the Promise Land, meaning they were going the opposite direction where God intended them to go; so God turned them around and placed them back on the right path.

The name “SEIR” means holiness; and they were wandering for 40 years just learning to be holy people unto the Lord!  Without HOLINESS–no man can see the Lord and you can’t see the PATH to walk in.  You are walking BLIND.

Now I began to think deeper about Mount Seir; how that it could represent some of the great mountain ranges in our lives that we must overcome.

I’ve already mentioned some of the HABITS which you, no doubt, have already mentally added to.

All of these things are just huge MOUNTAINS that seem to loom over us with DOUBT, and FEAR, and maybe SHAME.

So how do we get rid of that mountain (s)?

If you had to move a mountain and there was no way around it, or through it, how would you do it?  You would start by moving one rock at a time.

Just like you begin a journey of a thousand miles with one step–you move a mountain by moving one rock at a time.

Moving Mountains, One Rock at a Time
Moving Mountains, One Rock at a Time

Now sometimes you can speak to that mountain and YES, God can and will move some of the mountains out of your way.

BUT…there are MOUNTAINS in our lives that we are going to have to work on ourselves. Maybe for a lifetime.

Those MOUNTAINS are there for a purpose and you just have to keep moving them–one rock at a time until they are behind you instead of in front of you.

The TASK of OVERCOMING your mountain may seem impossible; but then that’s where God begins to work for you (Luke 1:37).

He makes the IMPOSSIBLE possible and He will not allow you to be overcome!

Banana-Oats-Fitness-Cookies-Howie-in-the-mountains

In your struggle to move your mountain, you will have times when you feel like you’re finally WINNING THE BATTLE!

Then suddenly…you find yourself in a pile of rock rubble, wondering if the VICTORY will ever come.

I have experienced this in my own life, finding myself in the “rubble” of CRITICISM.

I may go on for days, weeks, without being critical of someone or some thing.  But just when I think I’ve overcome it, here it comes again.  Often, my beloved wife of 51 years will give me that look without saying a word, knowing that I’ve lost my way–again!

But little by little, one STONE at a time, that MOUNTAIN is coming down.  I believe that most of my mountain has been moved; but there are still a few rocks and yes, boulders, that have to go.

We still have a lot of MOUNTAINS to move in our Christian lives.  None of us have cleared them all.  The KEY is to remove them and not just keep CIRCLING around them.

Never accept the excuse that “That’s just the way I am.  I can’t help it!”  That is a cop out!

We can’t allow ourselves the luxury of CAMPING on the wrong side of the MOUNTAIN forever when VICTORY in Jesus can only be found on the other side.

REMEMBER what the Lord said to Moses and the Children of Israel in Deuteronomy 2:2,3…

“You’ve been going around in circles in these hills long enough; go North” (The Message bible).

What mountains are you facing as you read my thoughts in this blog-study?

Whatever it is, you can begin dismantling it right now!  Give it to JESUS; seek His help. Why move it alone?  You can do ALL THINGS through Christ Jesus, who strengthens you, but you have to let Him lead.

I am moving my stones right now!  What are your STONES?  There is no better time than right now to move NORTH!!

IN JESUS’ NAME

“Mary Don’t You Know”

The Gospel Of Luke, 1:26-38 KJV:

(26) And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth.  (27) To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.  (28) And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women. (29) And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.  (30) And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favour with God.  (31) And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.  (32) He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of his father David:  (33) And He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end.  (34) Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?  (35) And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy Thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. (36) And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.  (37) For with God nothing shall be impossible.  (38)  And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

Angels don’t make a practice of appearing to people in the middle of nowhere.  So when Dr. Luke starts out his narrative, a short story about an angel appearing–both to Zechariah and ALSO to Mary, we know something special is about to occur–something that has never happened in the history of the world.

Seemingly out of the blue, God was about to announce His eternal plans in specific detail to one young and seemingly insignificant young girl, living in an insignificant small village of Nazareth.

Now the background of this narrative might seem small and unimportant in the big picture of things–where Mary was living and who she was engaged to.  But the engagement was all important, as it connected her to the GREATER PROMISE made long ago by the prophet Jeremiah 23:5:

“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch (Sprout), and He will reign as King and do wisely and will execute justice and righteousness in the land”  (Amplified Bible).

Even though Mary was a seemingly miniscule young girl living in a small out of the way village, God was going to use her womb to turn the whole world upside down.

images (1)Gabriel said “HAIL” – ‘Greetings’ to you who are highly favoured!  The LORD is with you.”

Here was a young girl, between the ages of 12 to 17 years old, recently engaged to a man she barely knew, planning with her mother no doubt, the future wedding. What to wear, how many guests to invite, food for the reception, a future place to reside….

Let’s just imagine that afternoon, Mary’s mother might have asked her to go to the well to fetch a bucket of water; so the dishes from the previous meals would be clean.  Afterall, Joseph was dropping by for supper that night, and they wanted everything presentable; to leave a good impression on the groom to be.

With bucket (vessel) in hand, Mary walks outside in the brightness of the sun, and there appeared a handsome, dark-haired young man, standing between her and the well. Surely she was troubled by the stranger’s words and wondering what kind of greeting this might be.  But the angel said to her (v. 30),  “FEAR NOT, MARY; for you have found favour with God.”

First of all, notice Mary’s initial reaction to the angel’s greetings.  She was “TROUBLED” and “CAST IN HER MIND”…( I call it “meditating” on the spoken words).  A practice we should all take part in when the WORD is spoken.  Meditate on what is spoken for us, to us, and over us.

The angel had literally told this young girl, that she was about to be the recipient of an undeserved GIFT of God.  What kind of gift would it be?  Why was the angel appearing to HER, a simple and sinful servant of the Lord?  Something BIG was about to happen–but she didn’t know what.

So Gabriel went on…“You will conceive…and bring forth a son”

The whole concept of GIVING BIRTH is a Miracle in and of itself.  If you have ever seen pictures of how a sperm and an egg unite, quickly forming into eyes, ears, legs, and a whole human body, it is a miraculous thing.  It is what we call “PREGNANCY”.

But here, Gabriel was telling Mary–a VIRGIN–that she was going to have a son.

That right there would be enough to absolutely put any woman, much less a young girl, into shock!

But Gabriel wasn’t done!

Today, when a woman becomes pregnant, one of the fun things to do is to measure how BIG the child is.  With fertility pills, the idea of giving birth to twins, multiple births, has jumped in number to six or seven rather than just two.  I would think that most mothers who find out they are having more than one child might be overwhelmed at such a thought.

But this news of Gabriel was far beyond that.  “You are to give him the name JESUS.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.”

Imagine if you can, what Gabriel was telling Mary here in the passage.  You are going to give birth to not just a ten pound son–to twins or triplets–but the Son of the Most High–God Himself.

GOD was going to be put into her womb–and start growing there.  How would God, who fills the universe, be able to fit into Mary’s womb?

Gabriel wasn’t done.

Mary wouldn’t even get to pick His name, because His name was already picked out–JESUS.  This is the Greek transliteration of the Old Testament name JOSHUA–which is a shortened form of two Hebrew words meaning–“the Lord saves”.  The son that she would have–GOD–would be the Savior of the world–long foretold!

What would this Savior end up doing?

“The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; His kingdom will never end.”

Many women over the course of history have given birth to kings.  Some of them have had the pleasure of seeing their sons be crowned.  Others have had the sorrow of seeing them dethroned.  Mary’s Son, however, is to reign forever.  His kingdom would never end.

MARY never asked the question “Why me?”

As a descendent of Jacob, she knew why.  She had read of the CURSE that mankind had been under from the fall of Adam and Eve.  She knew from the religious rites and regulations of sacrificing sheep and the Passover–that a Savior had to come to SAVE them from their sins.

God had promised Abraham “through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed (Genesis 22:18).

BY FAITH, Mary knew WHY this had to happen–what she didn’t know was the question “How”?

“How will this be Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

This wasn’t a question of DOUBT–but a question of mechanics.  Mary was about to experience the FACT that God doesn’t always do things NATURALLY!  He does them SPIRITUALLY–BY HIS WORD!

Throughout the first chapter of Genesis, we read over and over again…God SAID…God SAW…(Genesis 1:3-4; 6-7; 9-12; 14-15, 18; 20-21; 24-25; 26; 29-31).

So the question arises, how important are WORDS–presented by Luke’s narrative on Mary’s CONCEPTION?

I remember when I was a child, my mother telling me repeated times, “Sticks and stones will break your bones, but names will never hurt you.”  As well-meaning as mom was–she wanted me to get over my “hurt feelings”–it was a lie!  Names did hurt, because I allowed the spoken word of others (the bullying), to manifest in my spirit.

WORDS are “things” that can take on substance every time they are spoken.  Words eventually produce tangible “things,” good or bad (Proverbs 18:20-21).

In 1 Samuel 3:17, when Eli referred to God’s spoken words, he used the word “THING”:

[16] Then Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.  And he answered, “Here am I.”  [17] And he said, “What is the THING that the Lord hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me; God do so to thee, and more also; if thou hide any THING from me of all THINGS that he said unto thee.”  [“Thing (s) capitalized for emphasis only]

smalloneWORD SEEDS were the KEYS to the virgin birth of Jesus Christ found in Luke 1:26-31.

The angel Gabriel presented God’s Word to Mary, but only she had the authority to bring that WORD from God to pass.

When Mary gave VOICE to the WORD, a “thing” was released.

Applying this important KEY to our lives today, words of prayer, WORDS spoken–WORD SEED first, then CONCEPTION takes place as soon as we give VOICE to a thing.

In Luke 1:45, we read “blessed (happy to be envied) is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of the THINGS that were spoken to her from the Lord”  (Amplified bible).

The angel told Mary that her CONCEPTION would be supernatural and referred to the baby Jesus as a “HOLY THING” (Lk. 1:35).  The VIRGIN BIRTH occurred when the Holy Spirit intervened to carry out the WORDS that Mary spoke.

Mary’s cousin Elisabeth’s pregnancy, after being BARREN, was evidence that ALL THINGS are possible with God (vs. 36-37).  What an encouragement this must have been to this young girl, and what an encouragement it is us today: ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!!!

conception_pregnancy_hormones_s8_2When Mary verbally accepted the spoken WORD of God and spoke into her life, she became pregnant (vs. 38):  Then Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaiden of the Lord; let it be done to me according to what you have said. And the angel left her.”  (AMP)

Mary agreed (internalized) the WORD-SEED of God and spoke–(‘planted’) it over her life–then the THING she spoke materialized (manifested) in the natural world.

Mary BELIEVED God, so she RECEIVED the fulfillment of the “thing” for what she believed (v. 45).

When we believe God and speak HIS WORD over our lives, we can receive the “things” that we speak.

God never intended the BIRTH OF JESUS to be a surprise to anyone.

He predicted it would happen in Isaiah.  He predicted it would happen in Micah.  He sent His messenger Gabriel, to SPEAK “things” to Mary on what was to happen.

Now you may have heard the Christmas story many times by now–but don’t let the wonderful old story stop enlightening your FAITH through the holidays.  GOD became MAN through a virgin–to live and die for each one of us.  What a WONDERFUL GIFT Christmas is!!!

Walking, Talking and Chewing Gum

Colossians 4:5-6 (Amplified Bible – AMP):

[5] Behave yourselves wisely [living prudently and with discretion] in your relations with those of the outside world (the non-Christians), making the very most of the time and seizing (buying up) the opportunity.

[6] Let your speech at all times be gracious (pleasant and winsome), seasoned [as it were] with salt, [so that you may never be at a loss] to know how you ought to answer anyone [who puts a question to you].

Colossians 4:5-6 (New King James Version – NKJV):

[5] Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

[6] Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

Sitting Around the THANKSGIVING Table with Family and Friends

IMG_6862-2-1024x682

After enjoying a scrumptious and thankful meal my daughter had spent the whole day preparing, my wife and I sat around the table, listening to the diverse conversation.  Every topic, from future vacations, work related issues, current events, and what ingredients went into the “bread pudding,” to…“There are ghosts that live in my barn.”

As my wife and I looked at each other, I whispered in her ear,  “Where is JESUS in all this?”

I had asked God’s blessing on our family prior to the Thanksgiving Feast, but where was JESUS at our table? What could I have said that could have been “seasoned with salt,” yet with grace and wisdom at the same time.  It almost seemed like ‘walking, talking and chewing gum, at the same time and not spitting out the gum.  Is that even possible to accomplish?

So what did I do?  I tucked the wad of gum, my unspeakable thoughts, to the back of my cheek…and just listened; not commenting, not wanting my speech to fall on deaf ears.

Was that the correct reaction?

I NEEDED WISDOM!

Our “CONDUCT” Our “BEHAVIOR”…

Conduct (Behavior), is in the present tense (v 5), meaning a continual action.  Not just for ‘special occasions’, but our behavior is to be continual–calling for believers to continually walk in WISDOM and TRUTH, no matter where they might be in place and time.  And for most of us, that can seem almost impossible as “walking, talking and chewing gum” at the same time.

Paul is not commanding us to do anything that GOD’S POWER has not provided the potential for us to accomplish ahead of time.  The apostle is calling us for a continuous, supernatural walk, which demands continual reliance on a Supernatural Source (The Holy Spirit).

Our responsibility then, is to continually work at our salvation with truth, fear and trembling as God in us, continually gives us the DESIRE AND POWER.

Philippians 2:12:  “work out (cultivate, carry out to the goal, and fully complete) your own salvation with reverence and awe and trembling (self-distrust, with serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever might offend God and discredit the name of Christ)” ~ AMP bible.

So Paul is writing about the PRACTICAL; how we, as disciples of Christ, are to WALK & TALK before the skeptical watching world.  And yes, that does include members of our families and friends who are unbelievers and who need our compassion.

As the old saying is true, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

WALKING THAT “WISE WALK”…TALKING THAT “SALTY” TALK

God calls all of us to LIVE lives of LOVE amongst each other.  To HELP our neighbors…to become a family, a community church of believers, that helps one another.

We must strive to always “be holy for He is holy” and “do all as unto the Lord.”

  • Walk in WISDOM toward them that are without.
  • Speak words of GRACE in LOVE.
  • We are the SALT OF THE EARTH – Without “salt” we will lose our savor (effectiveness), our essence to the unbeliever.

To Speak With Words That Are Full of Grace

The phrase “gracious” means ‘always with grace’ – ‘to be full of grace’ – overflowing with grace!  Grace also means “Favor”.

The word also carries with it the idea of the Lord’s influence upon our hearts…His unmerited favor (GRACE) and its reflection in our own life.

We Also Know the Tongue Has Incredible Power…(the power of life & death) For Good or Evil (Book of James is full of these words about the “tongue”).

A “KIND” Word Can Go A Long Way –

Think of a young boy with his first try at baseball and someone speaks words of encouragement as he steps up to the plate:  “Way to go, slugger!”

Proverbs 10:20-21 (AMP):

[20] The tongues of those who are upright and in right standing with God are a choice silver; the minds of those who are wicked and out of harmony with God are of little value.  [21] The lips of the [uncompromisingly]  righteous feed and guide many, but fools die for want of understanding and heart.

  • Love to give COMPLIMENTS.

ie. – Drive up window at McDonald’s…(mean) or (nice_loving).

A MEAN or HURTFUL WORD CAN BREAK YOUR HEART!

James 3, tells us that a TONGUE used wrongly…

The Message bible (verses 5-6):

“It only takes a spark, remember to set off a forest fire.  A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that.  By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell.”

That’s pretty powerful!

Speaking With Grace Has A Requirement

To SPEAK with GRACE we will need GRACE in our hearts.

Colossians 3:16 (AMP):

Let the word [spoken by] Christ (the Messiah) have its home [in your hearts and minds] and dwell in you in [all its] richness, as you teach and admonish and train one another in all insight and intelligence and wisdom [in spiritual things, and as you sing] psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, making melody to God with [His] grace in your hearts.

Why do we need GRACE in our hearts?

Luke 6:45 (AMP):

The upright (honorable, intrinsically good) man out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart produces what is upright, and the evil man out of the evil storehouse brings forth that which is depraved (wicked and intrinsically evil); for out of the abundance (overflow) of the heart his mouth speaks.

  • A person who says kind things, has a kind heart.
  • A person who says negative things, has a negative heart.
  • A person who says mean things, has a mean heart.

What’s on the INSIDE, is likely to come out!

Colossians 3:17 tells us what happens when you have GRACE on the INSIDE:

“And whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus and in [dependence upon] His Person, giving praise to God the Father through Him.”

DO ALL IN THE NAME OF OUR LORD JESUS!

This means with His Approval!

Do it His way!

Would the Lord approve of your SPEECH around others?

No one who CURSES, SWEARS, LIES, GOSSIPS, RUNS OTHERS DOWN…is letting the Word of Christ dwell in them richly.

** You’ll have a hard time yelling at another driver…in Jesus’ name.

** Saying unkind things to your husband or wife…in Jesus’ name.

** Saying negative things in the positive Name of Jesus.

Proverbs 12:13:  “The wicked is [dangerously] snared by the transgression of his lips, but the [uncompromisingly] righteous shall come out of trouble.”

Proverbs 16:13:  “Right and just lips are the delight of a king, and he loves him who speaks what is right.”

Proverbs 23:16:  “Yes, my heart will rejoice when your lips speak right things.”

Something is NEEDED first, before we can have GRACE in our Hearts…

STEP 1. True Salvation!

STEP 2 Complete Submission!  [Oh, how I fall short here]

FOUR TESTS TO TAKE OF “GRACIOUS SPEECH”:

IS IT TRUE???

“…seasoned with SALT…”

Seasoned With SALT
Seasoned With SALT

SALT was used for preserving and purifying.

SEASONED SPEECH is truthful.  Ephesians 4:15…tells us to SPEAK the truth in love.

Before you repeat a statement, make sure it is TRUE!!!!  Someone said, “I believe half of what I see, and nothing of what I hear!”

Just because someone said it doesn’t make it true!

It is easy to jump to a wrong conclusion.  PROVERBS 14:25 says  “A truthful witness saves lives, but a deceitful witness speaks lives [and endangers lives]”  (Amp.)

Before you BELIEVE something…Before you REPEAT something…Make sure it’s true!!!!

IS IT COMPLETE?

It is easy while sitting with family and friends at the dinner table, to get half of the Story.

What is said may be true, but it is not COMPLETE!

Before you swallow your “gum” while listening to the conversation; before you say something, make sure you get ALL the story!

IS IT NECESSARY????

What you say may be TRUE, it may be COMPLETE, but is it NECESSARY???

Ephesians 4:15  “Speaking the truth in Love” !!!!

(1 Peter 4:8):  “Above all things have intense and unfailing love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins [forgives and disregards the offenses of others].”

Some of the most hurtful words I’ve heard over time have been preceded by the words, “it’s the truth” or, “it’s real!”

Just because it is the TRUTH, doesn’t make it necessary!  There are times when silence is golden!

IS IT KIND???

(Rom. 12:10) –  “Love one another with brotherly affection [as members of one family], giving precedence and showing honor to one another.”

(Eph. 4:31-32) –  “Let all bitterness and indignation and wrath (passion, rage, bad temper) and resentment and quarreling and slander (evil-speaking, abusive or blasphemous language) be banished from you, with all malice (spite, ill will, or baseness of any kind).    And become useful and helpful and kind to one another, tenderhearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave you.”

I hope this blog-POST has been an encouragement to you as it certainly has been for me in study.  I needed WISDOM on my ‘gum chewing’ thoughts.

My Pledge, and I Hope Yours in the Upcoming Day…

  1. Determined to control my tongue!
  2. Say only good things about others!
  3. Remember my accountability! (Matthew 12:36)
  4. Ask the Lord to Help me!

(Psalm 141:3)  “Set a guard, O Lord, before my mouth; keep watch at the door of my lips.”

REMEMBERING THE POINTS OF INSTRUCTION FROM COLOSSIANS 4:5-6:

BE WISE  (Prov. 4:5, 7; 9:10; 11:30; 14:27) –

  • The principal thing is to GET WISDOM.
  • The fear of the Lord is the beginning of WISDOM.
  • Seeing souls saved around you is a result of and our evidence of WISDOM.

BE READY  (1 Peter 3:15-16) –

  • A good heart.
  • A good conscience.
  • Good CONDUCT.

BE KIND  (2 Timothy 2:24-26) –

  • Be gentle.
  • Be patient.
  • Be humble.

BE RESPONSIBLE  (2 Tim. 4:1-5; James 2:14-17, 5:13-16, 16-20; Mark 12:28-37; Galatians 6:10) –

  • Preach the Word.
  • Fulfill your ministry, whatever that may be.
  • Respond to others needs.

Oh, make me Lord, so much like Thee,

My life controlled by power diving,

That I, a shining light may be,

From which Thy grace may ever shine. ~ Robertson
