There Is No Magic Formula In A Handkerchief!

A Chemist Mixing A Formula In The Lab

“You shall SERVE the Lord your God; He shall BLESS your bread and water, and I will take SICKNESS from your midst.  None shall lose her young by miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will FULFILL the number of your days”  (Exodus 23:25-26).

“If you will diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord your God and will do what is right in His sight, and will listen to and obey His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon you which I brought upon the Egyptians, for I am the Lord Who heals you”  (Exodus 15:26).

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers”  (3 John 2 AMP).

HEALING COMES “by faith in” Something:

More precisely, in someone–JESUS!

Acts 9:32-34:  [33] “There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedfast for eight years and was paralyzed.  [34]  And Peter said to him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ (the Messiah) [now] makes you whole.  Get up and make your bed!  And immediately [Aeneas] stood up.”

In the verses of Exodus, God was simply telling Israel a way to avoid sickness, disease, and an early end.  What we see as God’s will for His people, to prosper and be in health, He is showing us how to get there.

Some people say, “I don’t know if it’s God’s will or not.  Maybe He wants me to suffer.”  Let me tell you something:  If I don’t want you to come to my house, I won’t give you directions on how to get there.

In Acts 19, the apostle Paul describes seeing a light from heaven above the brightness of the sun.  He said, Lord, what do You desire me to do?”  (Acts 9:6).

As soon as Paul was willing to YIELD, he was in a condition where God could meet his need; where God could display His power; where God could have the man.

If you have come for a touch from God, are you willing to follow Him?  Will you obey Him?

God’s Special Miracles Happen–No Magic Virtue or Formula In Acts 19:11:

“And God did unusual and extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul.”

Let’s look very closely at the handkerchief of Paul which had touched his skin (verse 12); what it means to say, when he touched and sent them on to others.  God’s special, unusual, extraordinary miracles were brought forward and diseases departed from the sick, evil spirits were vanquished.

Smith Wigglesworth tells of a woman who came to him one day and said,

“My husband is such a trial to me; the first salary he gets he spends it in drink, and then he cannot work and comes home; I love him very much, what can be done?”

Remember, HEALING isn’t always in the physical!  Do things then change if the healing needed is other than physical?

Smith replied,  “If I were you I would take a handkerchief and would place it under his head when he went to sleep at night, and say nothing to him, but have a living faith.”  Mr. Wigglesworth then commented,  “We anointed a handkerchief in the name of Jesus, and she put it under his head.”

The next morning on his way to work, the husband called for a glass of beer; lifted it to his lips but immediately thought something tasted funny.  He put it down and went out.  He went to another saloon, and another, and did the same thing and then came home.  That was a turning point in that man’s life.  Not only did he give up drinking, but salvation soon took its place.

Don’t think that there is some MAGIC VIRTUE or FORMULA found in a handkerchief, or you will miss the results of the anointing.

It is the LIVING FAITH in the man/woman who lays the handkerchief on his body, the POWER of God through that FAITH.  That same living faith is still present today: “The Blood never lost its power.”

Questions that are often asked:

How many of you today have known God has called you over and over, has put His hand on you, but you have not yielded?  Give up smoking; give up on over-eating, give up on exercising, etc?  Your health is at risk and yet you continue to disobey God’s Spirit telling you, ‘it’s bad for your health! STOP!!’

How many of you have had the breathing of His power within you, calling you to prayer, yet you have confessed that you have failed?

How many of you have prayed, “God, please touch my friend in the hospital who is gravely ill!”  God can’t do that;He won’t answer that request.  Why?  Because He is not on this earth, you are.  Jesus is the head, and we are the body.  Since the body has feet, you go to the hospital and lay your hands on him for healing, in Jesus’ name.  That is a LIVING FAITH.

How many believe the Bible is true?

Of course it is!  It’s true whether you think so or not.  Let’s go back to the first Scriptures quoted.  I want to show you a connection I found between spiritual growth and physical wholeness.  Getting spiritual things in order causing physical things to change.

All through the Bible–

You find God giving directions on how to be in health and prosper.  James 5:14-15shows us a double cure:

[14]  “Is anyone of you sick?  He should call in the church elders (the spiritual guides).  And they should pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Lord’s name.  [15]  And the prayer [that is] of faith will save him who is sick, and the Lord will restore him; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.”

PROSPERITY Begins With Obedience–

When most people think of “prosperity”, they think of $$$.  Your financial success is but a slice of pie from the wholeness of the pie.

–spiritual health.

–physical health.

–personal finances.

–and much, much more.

It all begins in OBEDIENCE and in the SPIRIT.

Jesus said, to seek first the kingdom of God and ALL THINGS shall be added.  Many today are seeking the BLESSING and not the Blesser; we’ve been taught that way.  If we aren’t willing to walk in His statutes, can we expect the blessing?

Some people try to walk in obedience just long enough to get the blessing, then wonder what is wrong.  Do they think God doesn’t know what their intent is?

If we get hungry enough for God, follow His commands, and if we seek spiritual growth, physical healing will follow.

[1] “IF YOU will listen diligently to the voice of the Lord your God, being watchful to do ALL His commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth.  [2] And ALL these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you if you heed the voice of the Lord your God”  (Deuteronomy 28:1-2).

When I open the medicine cabinet in our bathroom every morning, I look at the prescriptions filled, called into the pharmacy, to make my body respond.  I have a CHOICE: #1. Just read the labels and not take them or #2, take them as my doctor directed.  It’s my CHOICE!  Choose life or choose death:

“I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life…that you may live”  (Deuteronomy 30:19).

Start trying to lie to God and the curse will find you:

“But IF…you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God, being watchful to do all His commandments and His statutes which I command you this day, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you:”  (Deuteronomy 28:15).

READ Acts 5–This is a STUDY in Scripture you must know by now–

Sometimes to inherit the BLESSING we must obey the instructions.

In Exodus 15:26, we read “…if you DILIGENTLY HEARKEN…LISTEN and OBEY.”

So many times in our thinking process we say:  God you bless me then…I’ll do my part.  Before you can get to the ROOT of the problem, you must settle the fact in your hearts that God’s will is to PROSPER and be in good health.  GOD isn’t making us, or our love ones suffer, just to teach us a lesson.  Is that how we raise our children?  Is that how you were raised in growing up from a child?

[6]  “You have sown much, but you have reaped little; you eat, but you do not have enough; you drink, but you do not have your fill; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages has earned them to put them in a bag with holes in it.  [7]  Thus says the Lord of hosts:  Consider your ways (your previous and present conduct) and how you have fared”  (Haggai 1:6-7 AMP).

As the TV psychologist says to his quest who admit to their past wrong doings, “So, how is that been working for you?”  “How have you fared so far?”  Is your PROSPERITY, your WHOLENESS falling out of your wallet, your purse because it has holes?

In the book of Malachi, we find people in trouble and the Lord told them:

“Your words have been strong and hard against Me, says the Lord.  Yet you say, What have we spoken against you?” (3:13).

Here in this quoted verse, some people by their words of their mouth, stopped the flow of the BLESSING!

My mother confessed with her mouth that she would have the same disease her mother had, and her mother before her.  In 2008 my dear mother died of Alzheimer disease.  Had she stopped the flow of blessing by the words she spoke over and over again?

Seek first the kingdom of God and then…

Many times we need to put the horse in front of the cart; to obey whatever command that has already been given.

— God told Naaman to dip in the Jordan River.

— God told 10 lepers to go show themselves to the priest and as they went they were HEALED.

— God told Peter to go catch fish and the money would be in its mouth.

—  God sent Saul to Damascus to meet Ananias to receive his sight.

Many people SEEKING HEALING for themselves or for others overlook an important access to God’s HEALING TOUCH–The MERCY of GOD.

“Have MERCY on me and be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am weak (faint and withered away); O Lord, heal me for my bones are troubled”  (Psalm 6:2 AMP).

As central as FAITH is in experiencing the Lord’s healing touch, there is another Biblical approach in receiving divine healing.

It doesn’t REPLACE FAITH; rather, it seems to complement faith for healing, bringing another factor into the equation–MERCY of GOD.

A brief look at the Gospels shows JESUS healing people in response to appeals to Him for MERCY:

“As Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed Him, shouting boldly,  Have pity and mercy on us, Son of David!  When He reached the house and went in, the blind men came to Him, and Jesus said to them,  Do you believe that I am able to do this?  They said to Him, Yes, Lord.  THEN He touched their eyes, saying,  According to your faith and trust and reliance [on power invested in Me] be it done to you;  And their eyes were opened…”  (Matthew 9:27-30a AMP).

TWO BLIND MEN came to JESUS to be healed (shouting boldly in confidence) and I found TWO FACTORS revealed in the accounting given in Matthew:

#1.  The blind men had FAITH and BOLDNESS in their asking–“Do you believe? …YES, Lord.”

#2.  They also appealed for the MERCY of God–“Have MERCY on us, Son of David.”

So often Scripture points out when approaching Jesus for HEALING, MERCY was the appeal first; putting them in a position to RECEIVE the HEALING:

[22]  “And behold, a woman who was a Canaanite from the district came out and, with a [loud, troublesomely urgent] cry, begged,  Have MERCY on me, O Lord, Son of David!  My daughter is miserably and distressingly and cruelly possessed by a demon!  [26]  And He answered,  It is not right (proper, becoming, or fair) to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.  [27]  She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the little pups (little whelps) eat crumbs that fall from their [young] master’s table.  [28]  Then Jesus answered her,  O woman, great is your faith!  Be it done for you as you wish.  And her daughter was cured from that moment”  (Matthew 15:22, 26-28).

This passage in Matthew 15 show us also, our faith-filled appeals to the MERCY of God for healing can be made on the behalf of another.  In this case, it was for a mother’s daughter.

How Turning Past Pain Into Future Miracles by Whitney Hopler at Guide:

Your past pain won’t be wasted if…you turn it around to become a force for good in the world.

When you turn your struggles into service, invite God to work through you to do miracles in your life and the lives you’re serving.  You may discover God doing miraculous healing work within you, miraculously meeting people’s needs through you.

Healing Should Promote Serving–Matthew 8:14-15:

“And when Jesus went into Peter’s house, He saw his mother-in-law lying ill with a fever.  He touched her hand and the fever left her; and she got up and began waiting on Him.”

When Jesus heals you, the automatic response is to SERVE HIM!  No one had to tell Peter’s mother-in-law to SERVE JESUS.  He healed her, so serving Him was the ONLY appropriate response.

Now I couldn’t exhaust the subject of healing in one sitting.  My focus was to try to reveal some truths in God’s Word in connection with questions arising when sickness, poor health and other malady’s are evident in you or someone close to you.  Perhaps another time, another blog-post, I will continue the detective work in God’s Word.  Until then, start shouting boldly, with faith and confidence in what God’s will (His Word) has already been said about your particular circumstance.  If you don’t ask, you will not receive!

  1. One of a number of lies that has filtered into the church is that faith is a verb. It always appears as a noun – a given. Its the operating system. It is a shame that we can’t get to the stage where we just know its there. Although our capacity to use faith does grow as we trust.
    Bless you Mel

  2. Your post really made me think Mel. Faith is the catalyst for all things, the Bible says that without faith it’s impossible to please God but the problem is that we often have a warped perspective of what faith means. To me faith is a by-product of going through the storm with God and then finding out that He is more than able to deliver you and save you out of it. When we develop this faith or trust we begin to give ourselves over to His will believing that He always has our best intentions at heart.

Healing is such a controversial issue, for those who are in the midst of it and those who have lost those they love, the last thing they want to hear is that they didn”t have enough faith. But the truth is that faith means trusting in God to be God and to work things out perfectly for us and for His Kingdom, this may not always result in what we want to see but God’s perspective of healing isn’t simply physical it’s divine. No one likes to be ill, I ceratinly don’t but in the midst of these trials God is teaching me what it truly means to be the daughter of the King.

    1. LOVE your thoughts, especially regarding to FAITH aspect to healing. “Rabbit’s FOOT” faith doesn’t work; EVER! Hebrews 11;1 READS IN THE Amplified bible, “NOW FAITH is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses.” I like Creflo Dollar’s definition of FAITH: “Faith is the PRACTICAL EXPRESSION of the confidence in God and His Word.”
