Six Habits Identifying A “SLUGGARD”

PART TWO: in continuance of… “My Lessons from an ANT FARM” as we seek out God’s Word in our PROBING IN PROVERBS.

What is a HABIT, aren’t there GOOD HABITS and BAD HABITS?

Wikipedia Dictionary defines HABIT as, “HABIT-(or wont) are routines [customs] of behavior, repeated regularly and tend to occur subconsciously; the process by which NEW BEHAVIOR becomes automatic and is HABIT FORMATION.  Examples of HABIT FORMATION might be:  If you lace up your running shoes and hit the streets as soon as you get in the house from work, you’ve acquired a HABIT.”

A BAD HABIT is simply a negative behavior pattern  Common examples; procrastination, fidgeting, overspending, and one of my personal BAD HABITS: nail-biting.

And how about a GOOD HABIT, did JESUS have a HABIT?  To answer that question, you have to go to Scripture for the answer:

So He [Jesus] came to Nazareth, [that Nazareth] where He had been brought up, and He entered the synagogue, as was His CUSTOM on the Sabbath day.  And He stood up to read”  (Luke 4:16 AMP).

If JESUS’ custom [HABIT, wont, observances:The New Roget’s Thesaurus in Dictionary Form], was going to church on Sunday, Saturday or whenever, that is an example to me of a GOOD HABIT!

Lets now look at SIX HABITS Identifying A  “SLUGGARD”.

PROVERBS 26:14: As the door turns on its hinges, so does the lazy man [move not from his place] upon his bed.”

It’s hard to get someone to do anything that takes away from their sleep time; their afternoon naps.  When my dad would fall asleep in his chair, watching TV I would shout, “Dad wake up and go to bed.”  He would reply, “I wasn’t sleeping.  I had my eyelids closed to keep the dust of my eyeballs.”

PROVERBS 22:13:  “The SLUGGARD says, There is a lion outside!  I’ll shall be slain in the streets!”

It has been said, “you don’t want to do something that any excuse will do.”  No one can find more excuses to NOT do something than the person who is too LAZY to do anything!

PROVERBS 26:16:  “The SLUGGARD is wiser in his own eyes and conceit than seven men who can render a reason and answer directly.”

I have heard of some people who starve to death before they will admit they are LAZY.  But they won’t WORK for anything less than top salary.

People who LIVE second to second, reacting to whatever comes, instead of attempting to CHANGE THINGS before they happen.

Especially those who are BUSY all the time.  Busy people with VISION and A DREAM to chase don’t have much patience and compassion with those who are not:

PROVERBS 10:26:  “As vinegar to the teeth and as smoke to the eyes, so is the SLUGGARD to those who employ and send them.”

Don’t EXPECT a “sluggard” to get the job done.  If you do, always be prepared to be disappointed.  Their inactivity and bad attitude will have leave a bitter taste in your mouth and make your eyes water in aggravation.  Most likely you will have to do the job yourself anyway.

With the help of my Bible Concordance, the final condition I found of a “SLUGGARD.”

PROVERBS 19:15:  “Slothfulness casts one into a deep sleep, and the idle person shall suffer hunger.”

People who are unwilling to change their whole life, lack for the things they desire and need most.  FINANCIALLY, life will be a disaster.  Never satisfied with the things of this earth, especially for the things of God and not willing to pay the price to have them.

PROVERBS 10:4:  “He becomes poor who works with a slack and idle hand, but the hand of the diligent makes RICH.”

And more besides monetary benefits but lack also in spiritual wealth.  God will not honor those who REFUSE to seek after Him and WORK to make their lives an acceptable sacrifice to Him (“FAITH without WORKS” ~ James 2:17).

Even SLUGGARDS can change, if they really want to.

Take a LESSON from the ANT which FORCES THEMSELVES and KEEP MOVING.  They will eventually come out of the SLUGGARD condition.

Nothing creates a dream or gives energy more than getting into the ACTION and make things happen.  The sheer satisfaction of accomplishing something worthwhile is usually all it takes to cure the “sluggard.”  Trust me, I know.  Instead of just TALKING about spiritual things, I got into the ACTION. and how I began to be a BLOGGER for God; the WORD Detective, etc.

THE MESSAGE Bible starts Proverbs 6:6 with this phrase::

“You lazy fool, look at the ant”

How will our ATTITUDES change direction. “Your Decisions Determine Your Actions and Your Actions Determine Your Habits.” (8 Steps to Your Destination–steps 5 and 6).

Take a LESSON from the ANT and look closely at their industrious nature.  See how they PLAN the future, never cease to work to see that the work is done.  And “IF” our churches, filled with Christians, have that ATTITUDE, then there is NO LIMIT to where God will take us.  The CHOICE is yours.  As your MATURITY grows in Christ, perhaps you won’t have to look at ANTS so closely for instruction.  But until then…I know which CHOICE I took in the detective investigation of God’s Word in Proverbs.  THANK YOU FATHER and I give You the praise and the glory.
