Is the painted picture in today’s blog a painting of The Brook of Cherith? No, but it caused me to focus on the choices and decisions that are made in life. I have a granddaughter who is graduating from high school soon. She has been accepted to attend college in the fall and will soon have upcoming challenges that she will have to make choices in life. She is about to enter into The Land Called “There“.
God’s Word says in I Kings 17:2-3 “And the word of the Lord came to him [Elijah], saying Go from here and turn east and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan.”
Have you ever experienced God saying, and giving you directions in making decisions or choices in your life?
Circumstances and conditions facing Elijah had become dire. God had already given Elijah instructions telling the king a drought in the land was about to approach because of the king’s disobedience. That tells me, that even when are leaders of authority in America are in disobedience to God’s Word, we will be placed in the drought of the land; forced to make a choices. Weather, politics, food shortages and more. Pick up a newspaper and read the headlines.
The brook called Cherith in verse 3, means to “whittle” or “to file down” in the Hebrew language. Elijah had been given specific directions on how he was to proceed to “Boot Camp #1”. When God speaks to you through His word regarding making right choices and decisions, He will always give you specifics and a promise besides. You might say to yourself, “God never gave me instructions with a promise concerning a choice I had to make”. The reason might have been, you never asked Him and if you did, you weren’t listening for His directions!
Verse 4, “You shall drink of the brook and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” [in The Land Called “There”]
Can God really do that in my life today? God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. If He can lead Elijah into a place called “There” with a promise, He can do the same in your life today if you will only ask.
Elijah’s response should be our response when He speaks to us (Vs. 5).
“So he did [Corresponding Action] according to the word of the Lord; he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan.”
Elijah responded to God’s directions in three ways; his actions should remind us all to our responses of God’s Word.
1. Elijah responded in FAITH.
2. Elijah trusted God’s promises.
3. Elijah obeyed God’s Word.
The “What if’s” in making our choices.
What if Elijah answered God’s word like this: “I believe You will provide for me Lord…” Then proceeded to go in the opposite direction, going to Jerusalem and buying a wagon load of supplies. That would be WRONG ACTIONS based on WRONG CHOICES; WRONG CHOICES based on WRONG EMOTIONS; WRONG EMOTIONS based on a WRONG WAY OF THINKING and a WRONG WAY OF THINKING based on words not aligning with God’s.
RIGHT DECISIONS made in the Land Called “There” (Vs. 6).
“And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning and bread and flesh in the evening, and he drank of the brook.”
Elijah’s decision “to go”; based on God’s Word and was rewarded:
1. He didn’t have to eat crow.
2. The ravens brought him sandwiches twice a day.
3. Elijah’s Boot Camp I experiences fulfilled God’s promises, strengthening his FAITH in God’s reliability.
4. Elijah confidence was increased from God’s Word.
Are you getting the picture here? God won’t tell you to do something without directing you paths, by fulfilling His promises through your decisions because of your obedience, your faith and your confidence in His Word. Being doers instead of just listeners has its rewards as the Book of James mentions.
Boot Camp 2 in a Land Called “There” (Vs. 9)
“Arise [from where you are now], go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell [in the place called] THERE…”
“I am pretty comfortable where I am Lord. I have a roof over my head, food in the house. I’ve found a good church in my community…”; BUT, has your water run dry in your spiritual life? You’re not seeing the results you expected, physically or spiritually. The brook in Elijah’s surroundings had dried up in the place called “there”. Now Scripture doesn’t mention that Elijah had asked God about making a choice or decision, but we know in God’s word of his relationship with the Lord. We see in verse 8, “And the word of the Lord came to him“; and I think it was after Elijah’s doing some asking in The Land Called “There”..
The place called “Zarephath” in verse 9 means “crucible” or “smelting place”. This land called “there” was the heartland of Baal country and God’s promise of provision was going to come from a widow who was probably a Baal worshipper. Once again, along with God’s Word, a promise is given that God will provide. Even when things don’t seem comfortable beforehand.
Picking up sticks in a place called “There” (Vss. 9-24).
God uses natural things in life, putting His super on them and turning them into the supernatural. Jesus gave us examples of this while His presence here on earth.
1. Five loaves of bread and two fish.
2. Three threads on His robe.
3. Dirt and spit mixed together.
4. Containers of water at a wedding.
Choices, decisions and actions in our own lives might start with simply “picking up sticks”.
In observing and studying God’s word of the stories of Abram, Lot and Elijah, we should now have a glimpse of facing choices, decisions and actions where we now find ourselves. They have to be based on RIGHT WORDS; THE WORD OF GOD. We can’t let our emotions control our decisions with our wrong thinking. If we don’t look to the Word, like Lot, we will end up at the wrong destination.
Right Actions cause INCREASES in LIFE!
TURN in your Bibles to the gospel of John 10:27-28, “Can I really hear from God in making choices or decisions?”:
“The sheep that are My own HEAR and are LISTENING to My voice; and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never lose it or perish throughout the ages. [To all eternity they shall never by any means be destroyed.] And no one is able to snatch them out of My hand.”
ACTION means to “JUST do it!” “…follow Me.” In your choices, decisions and your actions “…follow Me.” In your plans, “…follow Me” in …
THE RAISING OF YOUR CHILDREN.
WHERE YOU LIVE.
LAST WORDS IN ARRIVING AT YOUR DESTINATION
1. You must release the WORD of God with your mouth. You might ask God about a decision or choice like this:
Lord, I need your direction and instructions in the choice I must decide on. Your Word says [pray the verse out loud; it releases the WORD] in John 10:27 that since I am Your sheep, I will hear your voice and listen. You say that You know me and that nothing will harm me in the choices you want me to take. THANK YOU ahead of time in JESUS Name. AMEN. That is just an example of asking before going to a place called “there” or any where.
2. Making a choice knowing the “promises” and doing so in confidence.
3. OBEYING the RIGHT WORD!
4. Then “be NOT hearers only, but DOERS by faith, in your fearless confidence (Hebrews 10:35). It has its rewards!
If you keep and act on these biblical principles, you will arrive at the right destination every time. Even in your private place called “THERE”.
