Yesterday, was Dianne and Mel’s [The WORD Detective and his wife] bi-monthly grocery trek into Bellingham, Washington. With gasoline at near $ 4.00 per gallon, we force ourselves always in being organized before leaving home. Since Costco is always are first stop, and to beat the crowds, we hurried in buying our needed purchased items and headed out of the store into the parking lot. I could smell freshly baked pastries, wafting through the air, enticing me to return and grab something that looked attractive to the eye. Dianne then made a remark about the sweet-smelling aroma, as I put the key into the trunk lock. “Costco probably blows a fan through the outside vents to draw customers towards the bakery section of the store.” My reply, “That’s a good idea. Keeps people hungry before they come in to buy!” In my quiet time before blogging this morning, Holy Spirit gave to me a Bible verse that brought my investigative study into focus “Achieving the Attitude of God” in your life.
II Corinthians 2:14-15 “BUT thanks be to God, Who in Christ always leads us in triumph [as trophies of Christ’s victory] and through us spreads and makes evident the FRAGRANCE of the knowledge of God.”
“For we are the SWEET FRAGRANCE of Christ [which exhales] unto God, [discernible alike] among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.”
When you are out in public, at a store, in your cars, or strolling through your neighborhoods; are you emitting a “sweet fragrance” of “the knowledge of God“? Do the people know who you are in Christ Jesus and if they don’t, how can you throw off that “sweet fragrance“? You don’t need to know what the fresh bread looks like, you just want to sample it because of the fragrance. Well, the answer to that question is something you are going to have to find in God’s Word yourself. I will try to get you started by “Achieving the Attitude of God” in your life. Remember, it will only be the start.
Revelations of the Blessings
Did you know that God has already prepared for us “secret” ingredients in developing a sweet-smelling attitude.
Psalm 25:14 says, “The secret [of the sweet, satisfying companionship] of the Lord have they who fear (revere and worship) Him, and He will show them His covenant and reveal to them its [deep, inner] meaning.”
If your desire is to achieve a sweet-smelling attitude, a smell that will be recognized by others, whether they really know you or not, saved or not. You will have “to fear (revere and worship) Him” first, and then…?
Relationship isn’t an automatic, magical happening. It’s a developing process and you know that already by personal experience. Psalm 25:14 in the Amplified version of the Bible says the secret to Godly relationship is “[the sweet, satisfying companionship] of the Lord” it’s for those who “revere and worship Him“.
People around us will always know, sooner or later if we are faking it. You can’t have an attitude of, “I’ll fake it until I make it”. It might work for a while, but a fake “sweet fragrance” will never attract anyone into companionship. Remember scripture says, “out of the heart comes the issues of life”. People will “smell it” and God sees the heart. So what does “wanting get to know you personally” have to do with how you smell? It’s not the bad odor of attitude but a “sweet fragrance” of spirit.
The Apostle Paul, in his written letter to the church of Corinth, addresses the subject of “attitudes” of church believers.
I Corinthians 2:9 “For this was my purpose in writing you, to test your attitude and see if you would stand the test, whether you are obedient and altogether agreeable [to following my orders] in everything.”
Paul was writing here to the believers about their attitude toward a member of the church who had been found in sin. He had been censured by the majority of the church and Paul through their wrong attitude needed now to change; to turn and forgive, to comfort and encourage the man. Paul says, enough is enough in your punishment. You need to forget your anger and achieve the attitude of Christ, which is LOVE. Here is where God’s sends His “helper”, the Holy Spirit into the changing of attitudes. God has things He wants to reveal to you. Could your disobedience to His Word be blocking the revealing of His benefits?
If someone were to tell you in secret that ‘there was a chest of valuables buried on your property and all you would have to do to receive the treasure was to dig it up’, would you do it? Or would you hope that someone else would do the work for you? Turn again to the Book of Psalms and look at the “testing” of your attitude.
Psalm 31:19, “Oh, how great is Your goodness [Your reward], which You have laid up for those who fear, revere, and worship You, goodness which You have wrought for those who trust and take refuge in you before the sons of men!”
If you are looking for the buried treasure, but refuse to listen to instructions on where it is revealed, you will never enjoy the “reward” or “goodness“. If you are in disobedience to the Word, you are blocking the Blessing; you have the wrong attitude! God’s “goodness” has already been laid up for you and the only way for you to see it revealed is by “walking in the fear of the Lord“. Choose to ignore the instructions or test, no “goodness”.
In today’s economy, our attitudes have changed. We are putting extra “stuff” in the food pantry. I’ve been told by some people that they have purchased firearms and are taking shooting lessons because our societies unrest. Psalm 33:18-19 reflects how “Achieving the Attitude of God” in your life will give you hope in the world around you. If thats not your attitude ,“then change your thinking, change your attitude.” Is being prepared in a time of trouble not prudent? It is prudent, BUT… Turn to Matthew 6:25.
“THEREFORE I tell you, stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; or about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life greater [in quality] than food, and the body [far above and more excellent] than clothing.”
Being prepared with the wrong attitude only leads to anxiousness, worry and uneasiness about your life. That’s NOT what God’s attitude is about you nor should you have that kind of attitude either. Psalm 33:18-19 tells us that “the Lord’s eye is upon those who”? Who will “fear Him, who wait for Him and hope in His mercy and loving-kindness. To deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.” What other assurances do you want? “BUT you are too religious in your thinking”. Religion has nothing to do with your attitude. Yet, maybe I could be wrong. The choice is yours to make.
Psalm 34:7, 9 continues saying, “The Angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him [who revere and worship Him with awe] and each of them He delivers.” “O fear the Lord, you His saints [revere and worship Him]! For there is NO WANT to those who truly revere and worship Him with godly fear.”
I started this whole concept several blogs ago with the title, “What does “the Fear of God” really mean?” to you. I hope your attitude has made an about-face in your worship and awe of who He is. It’s not a secret in finding His benefits for you in your circumstances. Start today on “working out your salvation” and “walking out your faith“. I can tell you from personal testimony, your attitude will change!
