Uncovering Your Destiny

Have you ever had a desire, maybe even a passion to do something you didn’t think you could do successfully? How about a new career, something you are good at or perhaps even gifted in? I sure have, especially when I regress in my life and see lost opportunities. Why did I miss them? And even today, as I look into the ministries I have or want serve in, did I give-up, cave-in and quit early? All of these questions run through my head all the time.  Being the Word detective that I am, I decided to research God’s Word and go back to some old notes I wrote down on October 16th, 2006.  I have kept scores of spiral wound notebooks over the years and they are great reminders of treasures I have found in God’s Treasure Box.

Where does DESIRE come from? I found a good place to start was in Psalm 37:4 which says, “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the DESIRES and secret petitions [your prayers] of your heart.”   First of all, what does “Delight in” mean?  Vine’s dictionary say this: “to rejoice with (anyone), to delight in (a thing)with (others),” signifies “to delight with oneself inwardly in a thing,” in Roman’s 7:22.  So, from my inmost self [my new nature in Christ] I am to DESIRE my Lord first, then He will give me…(see Psalm 1:2). My deduction; DESIRE is a God-given capacity in which He fulfills the developement of that capacity.  God uses the DESIRES, given to me, my soul and spirit,to get me to my DESTINY.

Did JESUS have passions, emotions and desires?  The disciples remember when Jesus’ passion was displayed.  Lets go to John 2:15 and look at a familiar story we all know well.  Jesus found in the temple enclosure certain people who were selling animals along with some un-scrupulous “money-changers” sitting at their tables.  Money changers were like people in a foreign country, exchanging your dollars into their currency, so you could purchase merchandise in that country. The reason they were un-scrupulous was that the exchange rate was outrageously in their favor; a 100 to 1 at times.  Would this situation stir your emotions and passions if this demonstration was in front of your place of worship this weekend?  It would for me!  VERSE 15 says, “And having made a lash (a whip) of cords, He drove them all out of the temple–both the sheep and the oxen–spilling and scattering the brokers’ money and upsetting and tossing around their trays (their stands).”  The question that should come to you after reading this verse is, “what thing would upset me the most?”  What do you complain  the most about?  Would it be something you could do better?  What flows naturally out of your life?  If you can honestly answer these questions, to use an old cliché, “If the shoe fits–wear it!”, or “either you are a part of the solution or part of the problem.” In either case, don’t just moan and gripe about it  but be a part of the solution.

Lets ask ourselves this next question. I have to ask myself this question at every turn in my life, trying to discover my destiny; what God has put in my heart. “Where can I produce GOOD RESULTS?”  Look up verse 33 in Matthew 12.  “Either make the tree sound (healthy and good), and its fruit sound (healthy and good), or make the tree rotten (diseased and bad); for the tree known and recognized and judged by its fruit.”  Ask yourself, “Is what I am doing producing any fruit?”  Lets try to look for an answer to that question in Luke 13:6-9.  “And He told them this parable: A certain man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it, but did not find [any].”  NO FRUIT HERE!  “So he said to the vinedresser, See here! For these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and I find none. Cut it down!  Why should it continue also to use up the ground [to deplete the soil, intercept the sun and take up room]?  Now that was harsh!  “But he replied to him, Leave it alone, sir, [just] this one more year, till I dig around it and put manure [on the soil].  Start your shoveling…  “Then perhaps it will bear fruit after this; but if not, you can cut it down and out.”  How does searching these verses in the bible help in discovering my destiny?  Most everything that we do in life does not produce fruit immediately.  In these verses referenced, it took 3 to 4 years to produce fruit before the tree was cut down. So don’t thik you are just taking up space and not producing results. That suggestion is NOT from the Spirit.

I want to point out today, some questions and answers to uncovering your DESTINY through the desires of your heart. Sometimes we often try to force our way into a piece of ground or “space” where we might not be invited. If that doesn’t get your attention, it should. Self invitations never work because SELF is first in our seeking. Do it God’s way and you will find joy.

Question #1  “What is the witness of the Holy Spirit in my spirit”.  What desires and answers to your prayers is God telling you?

Question #2  “What do mature Christians see in you?”  God uses relationships in helping you discover your destiny.  Proverbs 18:1 says, “He who willfully separates and estranges himself [from God and man] seeks his OWN DESIRE and pretext to break out against all-wise and sound judgement.”  If you find that you are doing your own thing, you will not find wisdom and judgement.  Proverbs 11:14 continues this theme and says, “Where no wise guidance is, the people fall, but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”   Who do you hang out with during the week?  Prov. 13:20 says, “He who walks [as a companion] with wise men is wise, but he who associates with [self-confident] fools is [a fool himself and] shall smart for it.”  If you are with a fool you are going to be a fool your self.  So ask someone you know and trust, who is mature in God’s word and has wisdom and understanding,  something like “What physical or spiritual gifts do you see in my life.”  Use their answers in determining you directions.

Question #3  “What career or ministry do I feel the PEACE in pursuing?  Search for God’s peace in all that you do. Do some detective work in God’s word regarding PEACE.  Remember there is a difference between being HAPPY and having JOY in your search.

Question #4  “What thoughts, visions and dreams do you have that just won’t go away in your mind?  Acts 2:4 that the Holy Spirit gives us desires.   “…as the Spirit kept giving them clear and loud expression.”  This Spirit given expression is still given today and not just at Pentecost.  To Uncover Your Destiny you must receive what the Lord is ready to give you. Your “…desires and [secret petitions] of your heart.”  Answered prayer.  Start today in praying to the Lord and He will answer your prayer.  He will find out what your destination in life truly is.
