My detective work began this morning while reading continually in the book of Psalms. Psalms 59:7 in the Amplified Version says, “Behold they belch out [insults] with their mouths; swords [of sarcasm, ridicule, slander, and lies] are in their lips, for who, they think, hears us?”
For over 40 years, I have personally exposed people to the “words of my mouth”. My belching out insults and ridicule, where people could audibly hear my words or not. Driving down the road, ridiculing and slandering other drivers mannerisms though they couldn’t hear them. Is this really SARCASM? Especially if they can’t even hear you? If you find yourself doing the same, where people can hear your words or not, it is sarcasm by definition. God’s Word says, “out of one’s heart comes the issues of life”. So it is more than just a word issue, its more about a heart condition.
I decided to Google the word SARCASM, to get a dictionary definition. Yet God’s Spirit kept speaking to my spirit saying, “as a good detective, you need to dig deeper than a Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary.” I immediately went to some bible dictionaries I have in my library at home. I could not find the English word SARCASM. How about a form of the word; to be SARCASTIC? No, there were not any biblical references to the word SARCASM. I found myself going down blind alleys, but kept looking for clues and then…I found what I was looking for. It was the Greek word for being sarcastic. The Greek noun is “sarkazo“; to tear flesh like dogs, to speak bitterly<sarx, sarkos> were also Greek variations of SARKAZO. meaning a bitter, cutting expression toward someone. After reading the Greek definitions I could understand the verse in Psalm 59, “swords are in their lips”. What do sword do? They cut deeply, they slash, they wound the objects or people for who comes in contact with the weapon.
I have found in the last few years, that my belching and my cutting and tearing the flesh have ALMOST disappeared. Yep, ALMOST disappeared! If you have been dealing with a SARCASTIC ATTITUDE all of your life, willpower won’t work. 2 Cor. 4:16 says that our “inner self”, our soul and spirit, our hearts are being “renewed day after day”. Aso Colossians 3:10 should remind us, “…clothe yourselves with a new [spiritual self], which is [ever in the process of being] RENEWED and REMOLDED into [fuller and more perfect knowledge upon] knowledge after the image (the likeness) of Him Who created it.” Call upon the Holy Spirit to be your helper in dealing with a SARCASTIC ATTITUDE and be renewed and remolded into the person God intended you to be. Don’t be contented with and known as a “flesh tearing dog”. Be renewed by the Power that has been inside of you all the time.
